Ambassadorships have often been political rewards to otherwise unqualified people - sent to places where the main skill is to behave properly at banquets and ribbon-cuttings, but this one seems beyond the pale. There are a lot of rich people who are smart, reasonably competent at what they do and not crooks. And some of those may even be Mar-a-lago members, maybe. Doesn't Trump know any of those? I used to think it was an exaggeration to say that Trump intentionally picked the worst people he could find. It's getting harder to avoid believing that.

Well, that's depressing, not only for how things are but also for relying on the media to do its job competently as a solution. Barring that unlikelihood, it seems that the left's only option is to be better at fighting dirty and without reservation than the right, something I'm not sure we can pull off. Something I have advocated for some time now. Not because I like it, and not because I think it's any way to run a "democracy," but because we're out of alternatives. They're like the Islamic "martyrs" - what can you do to somebody who is happily willing to below themselves up? What can you do to, or trade with, Republicans who are happily willing to blow the entire system up?
