Fwiw, a large enough empty tin can should be placed over the ball or over the other side of the hitch. They're shiny enough to be illuminated even by starlight. The same thing can be done by using soda cans on tent stakes. Not necessary for backpacking or in a campground, but very useful for any type of festival or other mass camping. and can be lifesavers for large kitchen or dorm tents with rebar stakes - both for visibility and by creating a rounded surface.
