More details:15-Year-Old Canadian Boy Just Discovered an Ancient Mayan City
... Gadoury noticed the ancient Mayan people appeared to develop their cities based on the stars in the sky, and decided to test his theory. After covering a star chart depicting several constellations over a map of the Yucatan peninsula, located in southeastern Mexico, he discovered a correlation that no other scientist has thus far made known: The ancient Mayans built their cities based on the locations of the constellations.
"I did not understand why the Mayan built their cities away from rivers, on infertile lands and in the mountains," Gadoury told the Journal de Montréal. "[They] had to have another reason, and as they worshiped the stars, the idea came to me to verify my hypothesis. I was really surprised and excited when I realized that the most brilliant stars of the constellations matched the largest Mayan cities."
... After discovering that his hypothesis was correct, the teen found that 117 Mayan cities have a direct correlation to the stars in over 20 constellations. However, he soon realized that one city appeared to be missing and deduced that the uncovered city is in Belize, a country located on the eastern coast of Central America.
With the help of satellite imagery from the Canadian Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and NASA, the teenager identified one of the "five largest Mayan cities" ever discovered, according to the Journal de Montréal....
So cool. Finding the city is one thing, understanding an ancient culture well enough to discover a way to find its cities that no one else thought of before is amazing. How a 15-year-old discovered an ancient city
... He analysed 22 Mayan star maps from ancient books (known as the Madrid Codex), and overlaid the star positions onto Google Earth images of the Yucatan Peninsula. He was able to show that the 117 Mayan cities did indeed match the star positions, with the brightest stars representing more major cities.
... William then overlaid a 23rd constellation, finding a discrepancy; three stars but only two known ancient cities. The location corresponding to the third star was on the Mexico-Belize border....
He also scoured the internet for other satellite images from 2005, when a fire had engulfed the area leaving it more exposed - and any remains more visible.
Armed with his images, he then collaborated with Remote Sensing expert Dr. Armand Larocque from the University of New Brunswick. By studying the satellite images and applying digital image processing a fascinating discovery was made; LaRocque proved that the 15 year old had found a major city with 30 buildings and an 86 metre pyramid....

Re: The Science Thread!
I suppose this is science......last night on CBS news they said the first penis transplant in the US was performed yesterday. This news sent me into a fit of vile thoughts and humorous scenarios until they mentioned that there's about 1400 guys who suffered genital injury / mutilation in the recent misadventures in Iraq and elsewhere. Then I felt like a dick for making humor from the story. Then I decided it would be cool if G.W. Bush and "Dick" Cheney each got a penis surgically attached to their foreheads; in the middle so that the transplanted dick would hang limply between their eyes. I guess there's just nothing like science.

MeerKAT joins the ranks of the world's great scientific instruments through its First Light image
The MeerKAT First Light image of the sky, released today by Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, shows unambiguously that MeerKAT is already the best radio telescope of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Array Release 1 (AR1) being celebrated today provides 16 of an eventual 64 dishes integrated into a working telescope array....
In a small patch of sky covering less than 0.01 percent of the entire celestial sphere, the MeerKAT First Light image shows more than 1300 galaxies in the distant Universe, compared to 70 known in this location prior to MeerKAT....
IMAGE 3: View showing 10% of the full MeerKAT First Light radio image. More than 200 astronomical radio sources (white dots) are visible in this image, where prior to MeerKAT only five were known (indicated by violet circles). This image spans about the area of the Earth's moon.
Wow.First image released from world's super radio telescope
... MeerKAT's full contingent of 64 receptors will be integrated next year into a multi-nation Square Kilometre Array (SKA) which is is set to become the world's most powerful radio telescope....
This "means that this telescope as is today, only one quarter of the way down (to its full contingent) is already the best radio telescope in the southern hemisphere," Camilo told AFP.
When fully up and running in the 2020s, the SKA will comprise a forest of 3,000 dishes spread over an area of a square kilometre (0.4 square miles) across remote terrain around several countries to allow astronomers to peer deeper into space in unparallelled detail.
It will have a discovery potential 10,000 times greater than the most advanced modern instruments and will explore exploding stars, black holes, dark energy and traces of the universe's origins some 14 billion years ago....

Wow. Ironically, nothing in the scroll is as "miraculous" as the science used to read it.Scientists use 'virtual unwrapping' to read ancient biblical scroll reduced to 'lump of charcoal'
Turned to charcoal in a blaze nearly 1,500 years ago, using groundbreaking digital reconstruction the scroll has finally been read and identified as biblical
Actual scroll on the right, "virtual unwrapping" on the left.
