Pubs work on plans to outright steal next election.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

New maps ordered for NC 2020 congressional races, in win for Democrats voters, North Carolina and democracy

North Carolina’s 2020 congressional elections must happen under new maps, a panel of judges ruled Monday evening, saying that the current Republican-drawn maps are unfair to many voters.

The legislature must now redraw the state’s 13 U.S. House districts. The judge — two Democrats and one Republican from different parts of North Carolina — wrote that the maps show signs of “extreme partisan gerrymandering” which “is contrary to the fundamental right of North Carolina citizens to have elections conducted freely and honestly to ascertain, fairly and truthfully, the will of the people.”

Monday’s ruling, a preliminary injunction, said the state may not hold any elections for Congress using the current maps passed in 2016. Those maps replaced a different set of maps from 2011, also drawn by the Republican-led legislature, which were struck down as unconstitutional racial gerrymandering. The judges ruled that if there aren’t new maps in time for the primary elections on March 3 then they could delay all or some of the primaries until later in 2020.

Candidate filing deadlines for the 2020 primaries are in December, so the legislature has just weeks to act if it wants to avoid delaying the elections — unless lawmakers decide to fight the decision instead, which they can also do.

But after losing a separate lawsuit last month over the state legislative lines, GOP lawmakers decided not to appeal that ruling and were able to meet the court’s two-week deadline to draw new maps. They did so with unprecedented transparency, as ordered by the court, and many of the new legislative maps passed without much political controversy, although some did attract criticism from Democrats....

“For nearly a decade, Republicans have forced the people of North Carolina to vote in districts that were manipulated for their own partisan advantage,” Eric Holder, the former U.S. attorney general, said in a statement. Holder is part of the effort to challenge the congressional lines. “Now — finally — the era of Republican gerrymandering in the state is coming to an end.”
He's baaack.
Senate leader Phil Berger issued a statement of his own Monday night. “With judges deciding behind closed doors how many Members of Congress from each party is acceptable, judicial elections have become the most consequential in America,” Berger said....
 It's the Constitution, stupid, and one of the unanimous judges is Republican.

I got an email from Common Cause NC taking a provisional victory lap. :-||
Dear Rep. Chuck McGrady and Sen. Chuck Edwards,

Oh my, a unanimous bipartisan panel of the NCSC has shot you down, again. Are you proud of wasting so much of our money violating the Constitution, spitting on democracy and expressing your utter disdain for NC voters? Is this really the legacy you want? It's not too late to show that you've got the stones to be something greater than be partisan drones, and to take bold action supporting the immediate creation of fair AND legal congressional districts.

The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem.

Btw, how's that override of Governor Cooper's state budget veto going in the Senate? Could I and others have been 100% correct that the sleazy way you overrode in the House would doom you in the Senate? Thanks to you Repugs, you are well on the way to being the worst, most impotent Leg. ever. Proud of that, too?

Sincerely,
(Vrede too)

Boy, the Republicans sure are betting heavy on this "behind closed doors" shit lately. Never mind that judges ALWAYS contemplate their final decisions behind closed doors and never mind that there are Republican members on all three of the House committees in the impeachment inquiry that are also behind closed doors. They've been describing these inquiry sessions as "secret" but the only way they're secret is if those GOP members aren't telling their colleagues what's going on. These people are devious and sleazy liars who probably have sex with family members. Behind closed doors.....in secret.

Fwiw, though, pre-extreme 2010 census NC11 gerrymandering (still may have been somewhat gerrymandered, idk) our Reps before Meadows were DINO Heath Shuler and Repug "Chainsaw" Charlie Taylor.

The racist, democracy-hating NC Repug swine have a long way to go to reach 'tolerable'. Speaking of racist, democracy-hating Repug swine:
Court: Florida can't bar felons from vote over fines, fees

Florida cannot, for now, bar felons who served their time from registering to vote simply because they have failed to pay all fines and fees stemming from their cases, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday.

A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a Tallahassee federal judge's preliminary injunction that a state law implementing Amendment 4 amounted to an unfair poll tax that would disenfranchise many of the released felons.

“We disagree with the ruling," said Helen Ferre, chief spokeswoman for Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. She said the state would immediately ask the entire 11th Circuit to reconsider....

To me, this is just another example of how stupid Republicans are. I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of white felons would vote for trump if they bothered to vote at all. Hell, just today even a white felon in the form of Rod Blagoevich announced he'd vote for trump if he could. Hilarious.

The White supremacist felons sure would vote for 45SHOLE.

Republicans block most aid to help states plan for presidential election amid coronavirus pandemic

Repugs know that they can't win on the issues. Hence, they rely on dark money, gerrymandering, Russian help, and massive voter suppression.

Proposals like these that would make voting more convenient for everyone will necessarily hurt the democracy-hating Repugs.
