I don't recall exactly; I think it may have been back when Greenpeace climbed the smokestacks at Lake Julian.
"You seem to have conveniently forgotten, as usual, that this tangent began with your contention that it's cowardly to not join the military."
I may have "conveniently" forgotten; ( :-0?> ) but it seems we were discussing draft-dodging, I don't know. At any rate, the subject isn't interesting enough for me to go back and pore over my posts.
"Whatever your reasons, you chose a service and specialty that had nearly zero risk of ever seeing combat during our mostly costly war since WWII."
Wrong...I stated my reasons above. At the time, I had no inkling as to where I would serve. At least I didn't run off to Canada to avoid service. My specialty was chosen because I knew my training would serve me after military service; and it did.
"Recruiters still lie, get it in writing."
Agreed. Long gone are the days when a handshake upheld a man's honest intention.
"If you enlisted in 1966 how can you say that you weren't "even close to being drafted"?
Meaning I hadn't received a draft notice yet.

verde, he may have convinced himself that he wasn't close; we know he lies to us, I wouldn't be surprised that he lies to himself
1A in 1966 is like way big time close and prompted many to join, marry or move to the cool blue north
bb is a draft dodger, as was I
so was cheney and lil bush
I've enjoyed the conversation - somehow imagining bb getting his navy initiation makes him look even more ridiculous

bb, your pitiful excuse for dodging service by joining something that kept you out of nam doesn't begin to stack up the brave men who left family and country in protest of a wrong war

The only liar (and wuss) you know is the one you see in your mirror. It's evident how you and Vrede secretly admire me.

Because you were a coward doesn't mean everyone was.

Not as ridiculous as a draft dodger such as yourself.

INTERNATIONALISM IN PRACTICE
An American soldier in a hospital explained how he was wounded: He said, "I was told that the way to tell a hostile Vietnamese from a friendly Vietnamese was to shout 'To hell with Ho Chi Minh!' If he shoots, he's unfriendly. So I saw this dude and yelled 'To hell with Ho Chi Minh!' and he yelled back, 'To hell with President Johnson!' We were shaking hands when a truck hit us."

You won't see that; didn't retire from the Navy.billy.pilgrim wrote: "long as you understand that when your 70 year old ass is rolling through the Walmart parking lot with your retired navy bumper sticker - a lot of us only see another draft dodger"
Let's say I did dodge the draft...no big deal. What's your point in all your whining anyway?

Whatever man good on you for doing your thing. Everybody has their things. I do things. sometimes I fling my own thing when I'm alone surfing the nets but that's another story and a completely personal thing.Mr.B wrote:I guess you'll just have to live with it; I find no reason to quibble about something that happened almost 50 years ago.billy.pilgrim wrote:bb, your pitiful excuse for dodging service by joining something that kept you out of nam doesn't begin to stack up the brave men who left family and country in protest of a wrong war...you are a draft dodger, just like lil bush, cheney and me
Moral of the story is just do your things and eat some chicken wings.
You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.

Yeah, I think that's the one I was thinking of. I was a storekeeper; my badge was just a couple of crossed keys in an "x" fashion. With a little effort, it could be turned into a skull and crossbones, though.Mr.B wrote:neoplacebo wrote:"When I was in the Navy, electronics technicians had some sort of lightning bolt type insignia on their ratings, but I was never on a nuclear powered ship."
This one maybe? That would be an Electronics Warfare Technician, which merged into Cryptologic Technician
