'We are the big school' – On seminal night, UCF shows glimpse of future and what Big 12 membership could bring

Boise State and UCF are eternal Thursday Heroes, the Sons of Zabransky and Kin of the Griffin Brothers. They’ve provided endless weeknight entertainment, last-call fodder and showcased time and again they’re capable of sabotaging the highest levels of the sport.

In the past two decades, the long list of bowl games that UCF and Boise have won includes the Fiesta and the Peach. The programs they’ve toppled include Oklahoma, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Georgia (both schools), Baylor, Alabama and Penn State.

They are separated by nearly 2,500 miles but joined by the underdog spirit that gives college football its quintessential adrenaline jolts. And in locales like Boise and Orlando, when those jolts evolve from outlier to expectation, the possibility of elevating their conference status looms.

On the day these two kindred football spirits met for the first time, they also may have begun separating to different sides of the moat that defines college football’s financial caste system. At least for now.

UCF won in coach Gus Malzahn’s debut on the field, 36-31, overcoming a 21-point first-half deficit and a nearly three-hour lightning delay. That paled in comparison to the news that emerged out of the Big 12, which could leave this soggy Thursday as one of the most transformative days in the history of the UCF athletic department.

The meetings of the Big 12 athletic directors earlier this week resulted in the league targeting four schools as likely realignment additions – BYU, Cincinnati, UCF and Houston. Yahoo Sports confirmed a report by The Athletic earlier in the day, and the additions could be made within the next two months although the timing is in flux based on the potential moving target of Texas and Oklahoma’s exit....
Careful what you wish for. UCF will now play a Power 5 schedule, and stingy teams like FL and FSU can't do a thing about it.

No problem here. I've only Always said that they should play a schedule before being considered in the playoffs.

They are a big school with a lot of money. I feel sure that they could compete with football powerhouses, but playing one or two tough games a year ain't competition. We'll see if the Big 12 can keep their other big schools;they just shed two biggies.

Meh, I'm no Georgia booster, either. Too bad 1 FAT CAN ain't around to grief, though. Might be good news for the rest of college football that the only TD in the 10-3 game was on a pic 6.

Go Bruins, LSU sucks!

This is wild:
Presbyterian Blue Hose QB Ren Hefley sets FCS TD pass record in season-opener

Michigan transfer Ren Hefley had a record-setting day in his first start for Presbyterian tossing an FCS record 10 touchdowns in leading the Blue Hose to an 84-43 season-opening victory over NAIA-member St. Andrews on Saturday....

The Blue Hose (sad prostitutes?), who moved up to Division I play in 2007, also had two TD passes from backup QB Tyler Huff, breaking the record for most touchdowns by a team (11), set by David Klingler and the Houston Cougars in a win over Eastern Washington in 1990. Hefley broke the FCS record of nine, set by Mississippi Valley State's Willie Totten -- who teamed up with wide receiver Jerry Rice to form the Satellite Express -- in 1984. The record was tied by Portland State QB Drew Hubel in 2007.

Hefley completed 38 of 50 passes for 538 yards, throwing his 10th TD pass on the first play of the fourth quarter before taking a seat. He did not throw an interception. Huff completed 7 of 9 for 63 yards. Freshman Jalyn Witcher had five catches for 156 yards and three scores -- all in the first half -- for Presbyterian, which set a school record for points scored. Matthew Rivera had eight receptions for 137 yards and two TDs.

Seven other receivers caught one TD pass. Hefley's touchdown passes covered -- in order -- 1, 62, 79, 36, 9, 25, 5, 1, 49 and 6 yards.
Home team Presbyterian is at Clinton, SC.
St. Andrews, also a Presbyterian school, is at Laurinburg, NC.
Not very christian to run up the score like that.

Maybe "Zips" isn't the best nickname for anyone involved in scoring competition.

Auburn's other nonconference opponents:
FCS Alabama State, home
#19 (will climb today) @Penn State - strong
Georgia State, home
At least a 3-1 start guaranteed.

Boise State 31
UCF, home 36
Strong win.

UCF's other nonconference opponents:
FCS Bethune-Cookman, home
@Louisville - strong
UConn, home
Only a 2-2 nonconference record was guaranteed, now 3-1 after beating Boise State.

Boise State's other nonconference opponents:
UTEP, home
Oklahoma State, home - strong
@BYU - strong
Only a 1-3 nonconference record was guaranteed.

Yeah, I root for the Huskies as a family peace-keeping effort, but without much enthusiasm. Maybe I'll just keep UNC and the U - at least it will free up Saturdays to do something outside. I could adopt the Terps, I suppose. The problem with San Diego State is that we don't get back to SD until football season is almost over, and nobody outside of SD County covers the team except in the little print. Perhaps the problem is I don't really have much interest in college football anymore.

I didn't write this, but I could have:
Miami: The only thought a Miami fan should have had after watching that 44-13 loss to Alabama is, “Why did we agree to play this game?”
At some point, you’d think people would get the hint here. Who has it turned out well for to play Alabama in a neutral site season opener? Whether it’s Louisville, Southern Cal, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech or whatever opponent you can come up with, the track record is clear. You’re not going to win. You’ll likely get embarrassed. Or, in the worst-case scenario, it might just break your entire program the way it did for Florida State in 2017.

Sure, the money and the TV time slot are great. But is it really worth it? An offseason of top-10 potential for Miami has now been reduced to the knowledge that it wouldn’t come close to beating Alabama if they played 1,000 times. Doesn't exactly fire you up for the next 11 games, does it?

Still a long way to go for Milton...
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/mckenzie-m ... 05945.html
I'll hope otherwise, but sounds like he's done with football forever. That's a catastrophic amount of damage to a knee to cut off blood flow (I never saw it in my career) and impinge a nerve - guaranteed multiple torn tendons and ligaments if not also broken bones.

:(
Even though it is FSU :puke-left: , this was way cool to watch:
McKenzie Milton's family, supporters had best view of QB's miracle return – 'I was really happy for him, but I was scared'

A rollicking crew of 78 of McKenzie Milton’s far-flung supporting cast wedged into Club Level 215 at Doak Campbell Stadium on Sunday night. There were his parents, brothers, his girlfriend, a doctor, a physical therapist, quarterbacks coach and even his barber. More than 20 came from his native Hawaii, and others from Minnesota, Atlanta and Orlando.

They came to support the Florida State quarterback, preparing to witness one of the most improbable comebacks in recent college football history in the wake of one of the most devastating injuries in the sport's history. And after the first miraculous comeback spontaneously arrived, it nearly snowballed into another.

It’d been more than 1,000 days since Milton last played in a college football game after suffering a catastrophic knee injury. That’s the day his father, Mark, refers to as “Black Friday." And merely his presence on the field would have been championed as one of the feel-good moments of this or any college football season....

But after starting quarterback Jordan Travis’ helmet got knocked off by blitzing Notre Dame safety Houston Griffith, Travis was forced to leave for a play with just over nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. With FSU trailing by 10, that’s when an impossible comeback to the field nearly intersected with an improbable one on it.

In the first game at Florida State after Bobby Bowden’s death, Milton’s return and the corresponding comeback suddenly felt cosmic. Social media was both thrilled and petrified, much like Milton's family.

While FSU eventually fell in overtime, 41-38, Milton stayed in the game to lead a 10-point comeback in the final nine minutes to force OT and put his family, friends and health care workers who treated him through a gut twist of joy and fear.

“What are you doing out there?” Teresa Milton, his mother, said recalling the emotion of him stepping on the field. “No, no. I don’t even have any words.”

On Milton’s first snap, he threw a 22-yard dime to Ja’Khi Douglas, a bold play call by FSU head coach Mike Norvell. Then Norvell didn’t sub out Milton, as is customary after a starter’s helmet gets dislodged.

This appeared to surprise Milton’s family, who celebrated the completed pass and completed comeback to the field with so many hugs and tears and shrieks that they actually missed the next play.

“I was really happy for him, but I was scared,” Teresa Milton said, sitting in a seat that was engraved with her nickname and local area code: Mama T 808. She added: “His surgeon, his physical therapist, everyone, his trainers, were all in the aisles right here crying. We missed the next play.”

Suddenly, Milton wasn’t going anywhere. He took a sack, completed four more passes consecutively and then FSU capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Florida State got the ball back trailing by three points with 4:15 remaining. Nearly four minutes from the possibility of a thunderclap of miracles, Milton calmly stepped up on a shovel pass on third-and-2 to complete a first down.

Seven plays later, including two quarterback rushes that had Doak Campbell Stadium holding its collective breath, Milton’s drive set up a 43-yard field goal with 40 seconds left that forced overtime.

No one was giddier than Travis, the quarterback Milton replaced.

“That makes me so happy,” he said. “I couldn’t get the smile off my face. Just being someone who’s been through so much. Just seeing him run out on the field gave me chills.”

The chill bumps ran out soon after. FSU’s offense sputtered in overtime, and Notre Dame countered with a field goal on its first possession to win the game....

How far has he come back? For the uninitiated, Milton’s injury happened when he played for UCF in November of 2018. It’s the college football visual equivalent of the Joe Theismann injury, except with more dire long-term consequences. It’s so gruesome that you don’t want to watch it. And the reality turned out to be worse than the video, as there was talk of amputation in the immediate aftermath.

Milton was one of the most elite players in college football at the time of the injury, as he’d authored a College Football Hall of Fame-caliber career by winning 23 consecutive starts.

The injury was so bad that UCF team doctor Mike Jablonski and athletic trainer Mary Vander Heiden are credited with saving his right leg. The knee dislocation was so severe that the thigh bone and lower leg bone were completely dislocated. That interrupted blood flow. He also had nerve issues because of the separation.

To put it in layman’s terms, Yahoo Sports asked Dr. Bruce Levy of the Mayo Clinic if Milton’s comeback and playing on Sunday night should be considered a medical miracle. “One-hundred percent,” he responded. “Of all the college and NFL athletes that have sustained a knee dislocation, none had specifically his ligament injuries, both the artery and the nerve damaged, and returned to play.”

Levy flew down from Minnesota for the game, and he couldn’t overcome the emotions. “Absolutely I cried,” he said. “It was impossible not to.” ...

I think it makes a statement to play Alabama and Georgia every year and an even bigger statement to beat Alabama and Georgia in regular season play.
