The LEO thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Does anybody else notice that the same people who insist incidents like Floyd are overblown or just "isolated incidents" by a single "bad apple" have no problem with broadbrushing all protesters into Antifa/BLM rioters, looters, and terrorists?

Buffalo cops resign from unit in protest after two of their own are suspended for injuring 75-year-old

An entire unit of the Buffalo Police Department resigned from their assignments Friday after two officers were suspended amid outcry over video showing officers shoving a 75-year-old man to the ground, according to the Buffalo News and other media outlets.

All 57 of the members of the department's Emergency Response Team resigned from the unit, which responds to riots and other crowd control situations, according to the outlets. The Emergency Response Team members have not quit the police department, but have stepped down from the tactical unit, the Buffalo News reported....
Good riddance.

Edit: Gov Cuomo called the guy in the hospital. I haven't looked for the diagnosis, but the only reason I know of that he would be admitted in "serious condition" and kept for a few days is a brain bleed.

The Police Are Targeting Protest Medics

On top of instigating violence with peaceful protesters and escalating the demonstrations with shows of force and military-style gear and vehicles (and the actual military), police officers have targeted essential workers such as health care personnel and food deliverers, as well as journalists, including a HuffPost reporter.

Police brutality is wrong under any circumstances, but the instances of medical personnel being assaulted or harassed are deeply troubling.

Police used shotguns to fire bean bags filled with lead pellets at an injured protester and the medics trying to assist him during an Austin, Texas, demonstration....

In Asheville, North Carolina, police officers destroyed a medical assistance tent and the water supplies volunteers brought.

During times of war, soldiers aren’t allowed to attack military medics. It’s in the Geneva Convention, which states:
Medical personnel exclusively engaged in the search for, or the collection, transport or treatment of the wounded or sick, or in the prevention of disease, staff exclusively engaged in the administration of medical units and establishments, as well as chaplains attached to the armed forces, shall be respected and protected in all circumstances.
Even in their combat-ready armor, with their combat-style rifles and combat-looking vehicles, police officers aren’t soldiers and aren’t trained like soldiers. But if they want to dress up like soldiers, they should be expected, at a minimum, to follow the same rules soldiers do.

I've seen other reports of this type of targeting. I'm not getting it, why are they going after essential worker types?

Makes no sense even for trumpaloons.

Idk, I've never had a cop explain it to me. Some guesses:

--- We moderate the effects of their terror tactics.
--- Attacking us also takes out the people that naturally step up to defend us.
--- They are offended by having to see us as human, rather than their "protestor" stereotype.
--- They are offended by knowing that there are protestors that are every bit the the professional that they are, often more so.
--- We don't run and thus are easy targets.
--- They know we're dedicated, not just dilettantes that they'll never see again.
--- They're assholes and it's what assholes do.

Buffalo Cops Who Knocked Peaceful Protester To The Ground Charged With Assault

Two Buffalo, New York, police officers have each been charged with second-degree assault for their roles in an incident that left a protester seriously injured.

Both pleaded not guilty to the charges, which are felonies due to the age of the victim....

Each officer faces a maximum penalty of seven years behind bars, the district attorney said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) called the video “fundamentally offensive and frightening” during his regularly scheduled news conference Friday.

“You see that video, and it disturbs your basic sense of decency and humanity. ... Where was the threat?” he said. “It’s just fundamentally offensive and frightening. ... How did we get to this place?”

An attorney for Gugino said in a statement on Friday that his client “has been a longtime peaceful protester, human rights advocate and overall fan of the U.S. Constitution for many years.” ...
Comments:
I think it's safe to say that Police Officer became one of the least desired career paths this year.
Had it not been for the video, the “tripped and fell” defense probably would have stuck.

Police are now brutalizing everyone just to maintain their ability to brutalize black people
Defunding the police sounds radical until you realize realize we’ve been defunding education for years.
Still thinking about how people were like “not all cops!” then literally all cops in Buffalo were like “no, it’s all of us”

Yeah, there are exceptions. Not all cops are little fascist entities unto themselves, but on a national basis I would say they break down about 70% little aspiring fascists, 10% teetering on the edge of fascist, and 20% have genuine desire to "serve and protect" in accordance with the plan.

Speaking of that:

The president of the Chicago Police Board said he was struck five times by officers with batons after trying to defuse tensions at a protest
