Nttawwt.Jury awards millions in damages for Unite the Right rally violence
A jury ordered white nationalist leaders and organizations to pay more than $25 million in damages Tuesday over violence that erupted during the deadly 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.
After a nearly monthlong civil trial, the jury in U.S. District Court deadlocked on two key claims but found the white nationalists liable on four other counts in the lawsuit filed by nine people who suffered physical or emotional injuries during the two days of demonstrations.
Attorney Roberta Kaplan said the plaintiffs’ lawyers plan to refile the suit so a new jury can decide the two claims this jury could not reach a verdict on. She called the amount of damages awarded from the others counts “eye opening”
“That sends a loud message,” Kaplan said....
White nationalist leader Richard Spencer vowed to appeal, saying the “entire theory of that verdict is fundamentally flawed.”
He said plaintiffs’ attorneys made it clear before the trial that they wanted to use the case to bankrupt him and other defendants.
... Lawyers for the plaintiffs invoked a 150-year-old law passed after the Civil War to shield freed slaves from violence and protect their civil rights. Commonly known as the Ku Klux Klan Act, the law contains a rarely used provision that allows private citizens to sue other citizens for civil rights violations.
... an avowed admirer of Adolf Hitler rammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one woman and injuring dozens more.
Then-President Donald Trump touched off a political firestorm when he failed to immediately denounce the white nationalists, saying there were “ very fine people on both sides. ”
The driver of the car, James Alex Fields Jr., is serving life in prison for murder and hate crimes. Fields is one of 24 defendants named in the lawsuit funded by Integrity First for America, a nonprofit civil rights organization formed in response to the violence in Charlottesville....
Before the trial, Judge Norman Moon issued default judgments against another seven defendants who refused to respond to the lawsuit. The court will decide damages against those defendants.

Maybe the Waukesha parade killer should claim that he was there to protect private property whose owners didn't ask for it to be protected and that he thought that the Dancing Grannies were trying to take his truck so they could run him over with it. Oh wait, that defense only works if one is White. Wisconsin law is funny that way.

Texas man gets 10 years for shooting man in eye with paintball in protest
An Oregon court has sentenced a self-proclaimed member of the Proud Boys to 10 years in prison for shooting a man in the eye with a paintball gun during a protest last year.
Alan Swinney, 51, of Texas, was also sentenced Friday to three years of post-prison supervision, according to the Multnomah County district attorney's office.
A jury found Swinney guilty in October on 11 criminal charges, including second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, second-degree attempted assault, fourth-degree attempted assault, two counts of second-degree unlawful use of mace, unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon (paintball gun) and pointing a firearm at another.
Prosecutors said Swinney traveled to Portland to attend two days of protests in August 2020. They said he shot a man in the face with a paintball gun, sprayed people directly in the face with bear mace and aimed a loaded Ruger .357 magnum gun at people in a crowd.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Nathan Vasquez described Swinney as a "White nationalist vigilante cowboy" who traveled to Portland to "engage in political violence."

The Portland protests in the summer of 2020 were held in reaction to police violence, spurred specifically by the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Oregonian reported that defense attorneys said Swinney acted in self-defense against other "agitators" who attended the protests. Lawyer Joseph Westover sought a lesser sentence due to Swinney's post-traumatic stress disorder from his military service during Operation Desert Storm and his lack of a serious criminal record.

Man threatened to kill US senator and ‘take back Washington,’ feds say. He’s prison-bound
A New York man is headed to prison after he was accused of threatening to kill a member of Congress and “take back Washington” in a series of social media posts aimed at U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock.
A judge sentenced Eduard Florea, 41, to nearly three years in prison months after the Queens man pleaded guilty to posting threats against the Democratic senator from Georgia, and other elected officials, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced in a Dec. 16 news release.
Back in August, he also pleaded guilty to illegally possessing ammunition as a convicted felon.
Florea, a.k.a “LoneWolfWar,” made repeated threats on social media site Parler during and before the U.S. Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, court documents show. At least two of his threats targeted Rev. Warnock, who won a high-stakes run-off to become one of Georgia’s two U.S. senators.
“Warnok [sic] is going to have a hard time casting votes for communist policies when he’s swinging [sic] with the (expletive) fish,” Florea wrote Jan. 5, according to a federal indictment.
The next day, authorities said, he posted a response about Warnock on Parler that read: “Dead men can’t pass (expletive) votes.”...

Seems an un-reasonably harsh sentence for something milder than many of the things said on 1/6.
Or could it be that we don’t have the guts to go after our own war criminals from the bush administration or any of the various seditious thieving scumbags from the trump administration and friends when they see in big groups.

More than a few scumbags went to prison back during the Nixon regime. The new GQP has an extreme aversion to accountability, much less prison. They think they're special and act like it. I hope they die soon.

While Jewish Americans make up less than 3% of the population, Jewish Americans are the religious and ethnic group most victimized by hate crimes.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that 54.9% of religious biased crimes targeted Jews. In 2020 - the most recent data year available - a majority of reported incidents involved the destruction or vandalism of property followed by intimidation and assaults.
The call for more security began in the wake of 9/11 as conspiracy theories swirled that Jews were responsible for bringing down the twin towers of the World Trade Center and coincided with a wave of terrorist attacks in Israel....

Experts said the upsurge in violence directed at Jewish Americans is being fueled by three different sources at the same time: global Islamic terrorism, anti-Zionism and the resurgence of white nationalism in the United States....
Nearly 1 in 4 American Jews has been the subject of anti-semitism over the past year, according to a report by the American Jewish Committee, an advocacy group. I don't know if it's real or not - could be. But it wouldn't be out of reason that some rwnj would jump right on any corporation's efforts to do anything that could conceivably be interpreted as maybe "socially sensitive" or (gasp) "politically correct".
