Zaniar Matapour, 42, allegedly opened fire at three different locations in Oslo, Norway, during Pride month celebrations....

Ex-plumber Matapour was on the police radar back in 2015 amid fears he had become radicalised and was part of an "Islamist extremist network".

The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) decided he was "not an imminent threat" around a month ago.

2 men guilty of conspiring to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

... Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr. were also found guilty of conspiring to obtain a weapon of mass destruction, namely a bomb to blow up a bridge and stymie police if the kidnapping could be pulled off at Whitmer’s vacation home.

Croft, 46, a trucker from Bear, Delaware, was also convicted of another explosives charge. The jury deliberated for roughly eight hours over two days.

It was the second trial for the pair after a jury in April couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict after five days. Two other men were acquitted and two more pleaded guilty and testified for prosecutors.

The result was a big win for the U.S. Justice Department following the shocking mixed outcome last spring....

"Entrapment" is more complex than generally believed. If these guys were "predisposed" to commit a stupid and doomed crime and the FBI guys greased the wheels toward catching them, it's not legally "entrapment" and they deserve what they get.

Entrapment is a complete defense to a criminal charge, on the theory that "Government agents may not originate a criminal design, implant in an innocent person's mind the disposition to commit a criminal act, and then induce commission of the crime so that the Government may prosecute." Jacobson v. United States, 503 U.S. 540, 548 (1992). A valid entrapment defense has two related elements: (1) government inducement of the crime, and (2) the defendant's lack of predisposition to engage in the criminal conduct. Mathews v. United States, 485 U.S. 58, 63 (1988). Of the two elements, predisposition is by far the more important.

Inducement is the threshold issue in the entrapment defense. Mere solicitation to commit a crime is not inducement. Sorrells v. United States, 287 U.S. 435, 451 (1932). Nor does the government's use of artifice, stratagem, pretense, or deceit establish inducement. Id. at 441. Rather, inducement requires a showing of at least persuasion or mild coercion, United States v. Nations, 764 F.2d 1073, 1080 (5th Cir. 1985); pleas based on need, sympathy, or friendship, ibid.; or extraordinary promises of the sort "that would blind the ordinary person to his legal duties," United States v. Evans, 924 F.2d 714, 717 (7th Cir. 1991). See also United States v. Kelly, 748 F.2d 691, 698 (D.C. Cir. 1984) (inducement shown only if government's behavior was such that "a law-abiding citizen's will to obey the law could have been overborne"); United States v. Johnson, 872 F.2d 612, 620 (5th Cir. 1989) (inducement shown if government created "a substantial risk that an offense would be committed by a person other than one ready to commit it").

Even if inducement has been shown, a finding of predisposition is fatal to an entrapment defense. The predisposition inquiry focuses upon whether the defendant "was an unwary innocent or, instead, an unwary criminal who readily availed himself of the opportunity to perpetrate the crime." Mathews, 485 U.S. at 63. Thus, predisposition should not be confused with intent or mens rea: a person may have the requisite intent to commit the crime, yet be entrapped. Also, predisposition may exist even in the absence of prior criminal involvement: "the ready commission of the criminal act," such as where a defendant promptly accepts an undercover agent's offer of an opportunity to buy or sell drugs, may itself establish predisposition. Jacobson, 503 U.S. at 550.

I understand, but 2 acquittals and earlier hung juries for these con wannabe terrorists suggest that the case was somewhat marginal. It’s hard to take fair criticisms of the water in the new teaser not looking real enough when the outpouring of reaction is towards Halle Bailey being cast as a Black Ariel.

... But since Disney announced that Bailey was playing Ariel in 2019, there has been no shortage of backlash.

Much of it is tinged with racism, of course. Halle Bailey is Black; Ariel, a fictional, animated character, appears to be white in the 1989 animated film. Despite the utter irrelevance of Ariel’s skin color—she’s a dang mermaid, people!—and Bailey’s abundant talent, casting a young Black woman in the lead role was clearly unacceptable. How dare Disney not pay slavish reverence to the original film by casting a carbon copy of the cartoon princess? It’s an ignorant question meant to mask the prejudice truly at play here. But then, that’s how the internet works, no?

The article doesn't say what sentence the prosecution asked for, but it doesn't sound like Judge Trevor McFadden, a TRE45ON appointee!, cut Hale-Cusanelli (or his aunt) any slack.

I think he should get a harsh sentence, but it seems in this case they may be tossing Brer Rabbit in the briar patch. I might have voted for chopping his nuts off and dropping him off in Somalia.
