Impeachment

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Witnesses intimidation while a witness is on the stand. Trump's getting more looney and it's only going to get worse as this goes on.

Resignation? 25th? Neither would surprise me at this point.

Although stroke is still a good possibility.
And now, his bff Roger Stone is convicted on all seven counts.

The squeeze is on.

Trump is flipping out. In response to Roger Stone being convicted, Trump tweeted (paraphrased) " what about crooked Hillary, Comey [more and more]... and Mueller himself"?

It's hard to imagine anyone suffering through this for 14 months. Bill knew that he was guilty, but he also knew that it was over BS, largely meaningless stuff. Nothing to compare with campaign law felonies and treason.

Everywhere Marie Yovanovitch went turned bad. She started off in Somalia, how did that go? Then fast forward to Ukraine, where the new Ukrainian President spoke unfavorably about her in my second phone call with him. It is a U.S. President’s absolute right to appoint ambassadors.

I liked it today when Nunes read a printout of what was apparently the first call trump ever had with Zelensky; a congratulatory call on being elected Ukraine president, and a compliment about how "Ukraine has always been well represented" when I owned the Miss Universe pageant. Classic wingnut dingbat nutjob dribble; nothing to do with what is going on right now. Nunes might just as well read out a printout of a call he made about how his newspaper was wet and in the bushes when he went to get it this morning. Complete irrelevance. How do these idiots get elected to public office? Astounding

Idk whether Marie Yovanovitch did well or not in her low level position in Somalia and I’ll bet that POSPOTUS doesn’t either. She seems to have been highly regarded by multiple bipartisan admins. That said, I think it’s fascinating that POSPOTUS is stupid enough to mention that she was even there given his lifetime of cringing cowardice.

Stupid for other reasons, too:

Fox News' Bret Baier suggests Trump just broke the law in 'real time' with tweeted attacks on Yovanovitch

Kathryn Krawczyk
November 15, 2019

Is that enough pizzazz for you?

Ousted U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch had barely been in the Capitol for an hour when President Trump "committed a crime while we're watching," journalist Marcy Wheeler tweeted Friday. That's because as Yovanovitch gave her public impeachment testimony, Trump attacked her in a tweet — something Wheeler is joining The New York Times' Michael Schmidt and Fox News' Bret Baier in suggesting amounts to witness tampering.

Republicans' first aim in Friday's impeachment hearing was to avoid attacking Yovanovitch so she didn't earn any more sympathy points from viewers. But Trump destroyed that strategy with one fell tweet, claiming "everywhere Marie Yovanovitch went turned bad," naming her work in Somalia and then Ukraine as examples. House Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) had Yovanovitch address the tweet, or "witness intimidation," as he called it, and Yovanovitch agreed it was "very intimidating."

In his live analysis for the Times, Schmidt concurred. "How are Trump's tweets not witness tampering? She's testifying. He's attacking her. And now she has to respond to it," he wrote. And, more surprisingly, Baier seemed to take Yovanovitch's side as well.
Bret Baier
@BretBaier

That was a turning point in this hearing so far. She was already a sympathetic witness & the President’s tweet ripping her allowed Schiff to point it out real time characterizing it as witness tampering or intimidation -adding an article of impeachment real-time.
A senior GOP source added to Baier's speculation, telling Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram "we didn't need that." And Ken Starr, famously the author of the report that led to former President Bill Clinton's impeachment, appeared on the network to condemn Trump for his "quite injurious" move, saying "sometimes, we have to control our instincts."
Lofty and impressive company you keep, GoCubsGo.

A senior GOP source.
Ken Starr.
Marcy Wheeler, a stellar "independent journalist specializing in national security and civil liberties."
Bret Baier, a committed con and longtime Faux Noise bastion.
Michael S. Schmidt

Michael S. Schmidt (born September 1983) is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist, author, and correspondent for The New York Times in Washington, D.C. and national security contributor for MSNBC and NBC News. He covers national security and federal law enforcement and has broken several high-profile stories. Among the stories was the existence of Hillary Clinton's private email account.
Irony.
He won a Pulitzer Prize for breaking the news that President Trump had asked the F.B.I. director James B. Comey for a loyalty pledge, and to close the federal investigation into his former national security adviser. That story led the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate President Trump.
More irony.
Schmidt also broke several stories about doping in baseball. With another reporter at the Times, Schmidt won a Pulitzer Prize for a story about sexual harassment allegations against Fox News personality Bill O'Reilly that led to Fox firing O'Reilly. He shared the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service and the 2018 Gerald Loeb Award for Investigative business journalism for stories on the sexual predator allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein that led to the rise of the Me Too movement.
Wow, what a journalist!

The Dem's good fortune is that Trump is his own worst enemy.
TV pundits: Roger Stone's convictions - obstruction of an official proceeding, five counts of false statements, and one count of witness tampering - are all very relevant to the impeachment hearings and will scare some potential witnesses into telling the truth.

According to Government Accountability Project, https://www.whistleblower.org/ :
DID YOU KNOW...

Exposing the anonymous Ukraine whistleblower is illegal. Doing so violates 18 USC § 1505 which makes it a felony with five years' imprisonment to engage in communications that "endeavor to influence, obstruct, or impede" any "inquiry or investigation being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress."

In addition, 18 USC § 1513(e) makes it a felony with ten years' imprisonment to "retaliate, [or] take any action harmful to any person, including interference with the lawful employment or livelihood of any person, for providing to a law enforcement officer any truthful information relating to the commission or possible commission of any Federal offense..."

Congressional oversight requires a free flow of information from executive branch employees, and an attempt to reveal the identity of a whistleblower is an attempt to influence, obstruct, or impede a congressional investigation.

Attempts at outing the whistleblower attack a key principal of whistleblower protection laws: the right to submit evidence anonymously to neutralize the fear of retaliation. All whistleblowing disclosure laws since 1978 include protection against exposing the whistleblower's identity. Canceling the right to anonymity increases the risk of retaliation and chills others from coming forward, drastically reducing the power of whistleblowers to expose abuses of power that betray the public trust.

ICYMI...

Identifying or misidentifying a whistleblower can have tragic consequences. In the case of the Ukraine whistleblower, Donald Trump Jr. may have opened up an uninvolved person's career to unfair scrutiny and potentially put the individual's life in danger.

In the context of an investigation, someone who names or retaliates against a whistleblower could be prosecuted for obstructing an investigation. Our experts talk with the New York Times, The Guardian, and ABC News about the importance of anonymity.

Whistleblower retaliation can take more forms than revealing their identity. Our Tom Devine tells CNN, "The forms of harassment on the job are limited only by the imagination.

Actually, it is. You see, the federal bribery statute, 18 USC 201, defines bribery to include attempted bribery. It's enough to "seek" a bribe - you don't actually have to pull your illegal scheme off.

But, cute cat, though.
