Whether it's right or not, it is their right. You, as a champion of human rights, ought to see that. The SCOTUS did rule that another's rights could not be trampled in order to uphold the SSM law; it appears that NC only enforced that ruling. It is odd though, that you call one's religious beliefs bigotry, while failing to recognize their rights. If NC, or other counties are providing other magistrates to perform marriages, it appears that they have a handle on the situation, a handle that is too slippery for you and other religion-haters to grasp. Be like me; apathy isn't a bad thing; let them fight it out among themselves; all that's going to get hurt is your feelings. There's plenty more in life to enjoy, rather than sit around getting your blood pressure in a tizzy over social issues. What are you going to gain or expect to accomplish? I'm betting when you and I die, issues will not have changed much more than what they are now, so why expend so much energy in screaming out your displeasure in petitions, hate-letters, and forums? No, they do not have the right to use a government position of authority to force others to practice their personal interpretation of their personal religion. They NEVER had that right. Not when similar bigots attempt to do the same to deny rights to women, not when they attempt to do the same to deny rights to blacks, not just a few years ago when a judge refused to let a couple marry because they didn't have the same skin color, and not now.

What they do in their private lives is their own business. No-one is stopping them. No-one is trampling their rights.

Being a Catholic means that you oppose divorce? Fine; don't get divorced. Don't have your church recognize divorces. Shun any family that gets divorced. Carry anti-divorce signs at military funerals. But as a government official you can't use your position to refuse government services to divorced people, because your personal interpretation of your personal religion doesn't like it. The job comes with the recognition that those you have authority over have rights too. That's NOT trampling on your rights. That's NOT trampling on your religion.
