... Whatever "should" happen with Valieva it won't surprise me if the 15 year old cracks under the pressure. Can you imagine?

4th. Sad for her but probably best overall. Will they take away the team gold?

Her skate was a mess, but props for finishing it.

1. Other Russian - Anna Shcherbakova
2. Other Russian - Alexandra Trusova
3. Japan - Kaori Sakamoto

They were amazing.

One take:

Olympic figure skater Kamila Valieva was failed by the system, adults

Good on NBC for ignoring the Tucker-style shouts of "Traitor" and heavily featuring freestyle skier Eileen Gu, an American competing for China.
Gold medal – Big air
Silver medal – Slopestyle

Heard somewhere:

Silver is the worst medal to get.
Gold = Winner!
Bronze = Happy to have medaled.
Silver = Coulda won.

Sakamoto (Bronze) and family were overjoyed.
Trusova (Silver) cried at the end, was angry with herself or the judges for not winning, and refused to mount the podium for the medal ceremony.

Alexandra Trusova ratcheted up the drama in an emotional day for the Russians as Kamila Valieva faltered.

It's so athletically demanding, is there a senior league you can join?

Actually there is. Teams for all ages and abilities. And lessons. But probably for the first time in four years, pretty much everything is booked.

Ah, I didn't see anything about separating out seniors on the website. Do these come with studded tires and electric broom attachments?

[O Really]

It's not mandatory separation. A geezer could play on a A team if they're good. But it works pretty much like bowling. Teams/leagues tend to be on various levels. So most geezers would have similar issues, such as less flexibility or less balance than the young turks. Flexibility and balance are both important in sliding the stone, apparently. Opportunity for playing/lessons is full this season, but we're going to go watch.

Well, I can honestly say I watched zero Olympic coverage with the exception of streaming a couple of videos.

Don't think I really missed anything.

Depends on whether you enjoy watching winter sports. Politics-schmolitics there was some great shows and competition. Snowboarding, slaloms, skating pairs - we enjoyed it. I think NBC et. al. did a good job with what they had to work with, and for the first Olympics I can remember it wasn't all-USA all the time. Maybe that was because USA didn't finish in medals as often as they might have once done, but still. However, I'm glad it's finally over. We'd had enough.

I do enjoy some like figure skating, snowboarding, arerial skiing, (though the results can be so subjective or unexplainable just like diving, gymnastics etc.), hockey and more. Some are baffling to me like bobsledding, giant slalom etc. They are all a version of hold on for dear life and hope I don't crash as gravity does it's thing.

They're the "hold my beer" sports.

They're like auto racing, we watch for the crashes. Otherwise, the clock is the most interesting thing.

I think they said the US won more medals than 4 years ago, pending that team skating batch. Norway sure kicked ass, though.

Ooh, imagine doing the giant slalom in heats. I'd tune into that.

Russia is trying to scare people away from the Paris Olympics, report says

Banned from the 2024 Olympics over the war in Ukraine, Russia has mounted a secret influence campaign seeking to discredit the Games and sow fears of terrorism, according to a new report from Microsoft’s threat intelligence unit.

The report tracks what it calls “prolific Russian influence actors” that last summer began focusing on disparaging the 2024 Olympic Games and French President Emmanuel Macron, including by posting a bogus documentary featuring a deepfake of actor Tom Cruise.

“These ongoing Russian influence operations have two central objectives: to denigrate the reputation of the [International Olympic Committee] on the world stage; and to create the expectation of violence breaking out in Paris during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games,” the report says....

I haven't paid attention, are the Russian athletes going to be able to compete under a neutral flag again?

This is the best I could find from last year.

However, even though the two countries will not receive invitations to participate as teams, individual athletes holding passports from Russia or Belarus may not be banned from Paris next year.

"The IOC will take this decision at the appropriate time, at its full discretion, and without being bound by the results of previous Olympic qualification competitions," the committee wrote Thursday on its website.

-0-? This time it's about the war in Ukraine rather than doping.
