Mass Shootings

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Another Thursday:

Three people dead after shooting in Iowa church parking lot

There have been 20 mass shootings since Uvalde. This won't count as one of them since 4 or more victims, injured or killed, are generally required.

Saturday, Go Iggles!:
3 dead, 11 wounded in Philadelphia shooting on busy street

... a total of five guns were involved....

(Mayor Jim) Kenney said the surge in gun violence in the city and across the nation “makes me not just heartbroken, but angry." He said, however, fighting this violence would be “an uphill battle" without measures to address the “availability and ease of access to firearms."
At least one shooter was killed and at least two shooters were wounded, so there's that.

Sunday, Go Vols!:
Police: Tennessee shooting leads to 3 dead, 14 injured

... Fourteen people were hit by gunfire and three were hit by vehicles while trying to flee the scene, according to Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy. Two people died from gunshot wounds and one person died after being hit by a vehicle. Sixteen of the victims were adults and one was a juvenile and several remained in critical condition, she said.

Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly, who described himself as an “avid hunter” and gun owner, called on Congress to enact “common sense regulations” to address gun violence. Kelly is an independent.

“That doesn’t mean taking guns away from responsible gun owners, but it does mean mandatory background checks and prohibiting high-capacity magazines that allow shooters to hurt dozens of people without even having to reload,” he said at a press conference. Kelly said his administration would announce new steps in the coming weeks aimed at reducing gun violence locally....

The shooting comes the weekend after six juveniles were wounded during an exchange of gunfire in a downtown Chattanooga business district.

“It’s going to be a long summer, and we have got to get out in front of it and put a stop to it,” Kelly said.
Wow, must have been chaos. Tough for the medics and ER staff to sort out the cause of injury in some cases. I wonder if any were shot AND hit by a car.

Well, don't forget that TN has Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty (an incognito scumbag) for US senators. It's like something from the 1840's so they will ascribe all this to some fantastical nonsense that involves "radical left wing Democrats" and critical race theory with a side of transgender freakout and a topping of socialist bullshit for the numb in mind.

Prediction: A documentary about Uvalde will be made that's exactly 77 minutes long, and it will be haunting.

I keep getting emails from Jim Lamon, who is running for office in AZ. I started sending him hate mail months ago but he keeps sending me his fundraising messages. More than a few times I've written back and called him a fascist pig and wished that he'd be includrd in the number of victims in the next mass shooting. I think this guy is in love with me because the more I disparage him, the more intense his efforts are. I've flagged his stuff as spam more than once but it still gets through. Somebody there loves me. i can't get around it and don't know what to do short of going out there.

 Yeah, there is that. But I'm always careful to avoid any specific threats in the love letters I send. This guy is of the same stripe of lunacy that Paul Gosar is. There must be something out in AZ that makes these people crazy. I figure a lot of them have been bitten by one of those vile poison laden lizards that are prevalent out there. Jim Lamon was probably bitten right at the base of the spine. Terrible.

It’s Been 50 Years. I Am Not ‘Napalm Girl’ Anymore. https://nyti.ms/3MkjJWb

"I grew up in the small village of Trang Bang in South Vietnam. My mother said I laughed a lot as a young girl. We led a simple life with an abundance of food, since my family had a farm and my mom ran the best restaurant in town. I remember loving school and playing with my cousins and the other children in our village, jumping rope, running and chasing one another joyfully.

All of that changed on June 8, 1972. I have only flashes of memories of that horrific day. I was playing with my cousins in the temple courtyard. The next moment, there was a plane swooping down close and a deafening noise. Then explosions and smoke and excruciating pain. I was 9 years old.

Napalm sticks to you, no matter how fast you run, causing horrific burns and pain that last a lifetime. I don’t remember running and screaming, “Nóng quá, nóng quá!” (“Too hot, too hot!”) But film footage and others’ memories show that I did.

You’ve probably seen the photograph of me taken that day, running away from the explosions with the others — a naked child with outstretched arms, screaming in pain. Taken by the South Vietnamese photographer Nick Ut, who was working for The Associated Press, it ran on the front pages of newspapers all over the world and won a Pulitzer Prize. In time, it became one of the most famous images from the Vietnam War."

Pictures "They are, in a different way, also the horrific images coming from school shootings. We may not see the bodies, as we do with foreign wars, but these attacks are the domestic equivalent of war. The thought of sharing the images of the carnage, especially of children, may seem unbearable — but we should confront them. It is easier to hide from the realities of war if we don’t see the consequences.

I cannot speak for the families in Uvalde, Texas, but I think that showing the world what the aftermath of a gun rampage truly looks like can deliver the awful reality. We must face this violence head-on, and the first step is to look at it.

I have carried the results of war on my body. You don’t grow out of the scars, physically or mentally. I am grateful now for the power of that photograph of me as a 9-year-old, as I am of the journey I have taken as a person. My horror — which I barely remember — became universal. I’m proud that, in time, I have become a symbol of peace. It took me a long time to embrace that as a person. I can say, 50 years later, that I’m glad Nick captured that moment, even with all the difficulties that image created for me.

That picture will always serve as a reminder of the unspeakable evil of which humanity is capable. Still, I believe that peace, love, hope and forgiveness will always be more powerful than any kind of weapon."

It took pictures to show nazi concentration camp horrors.
It took the picture of a little girl running naked from napalm and a ditch in My Lai filled with babies and women to turn us against the Vietnam War.
Most people can't imagine what these guns can do.
I think it’s time that the opposition to these insane gun laws presents the reality of the blood and brains of small children spread on the walls of their once safe school room.
I listened to a TV discussion where someone was suggesting that we need an Emmett Till-style dose of reality. Someone else opined that we've become so jaded by violent imagery that it wouldn't matter.

I think kids with their faces blown off would matter to a lot of people - but not to those who could pass any laws. Cognitive dissonance, denial, and cash.

Uvalde's only pediatrician told Congress yesterday that 2 of the kids had been decapitated by the AR-15. Decapitated   . I'm inclined to support a new Emmett Till moment - nothing else has worked - but that's going to be up to some parents that can bear it.

Rep. Pat Fallon Blames Mass Shootings On 'Dang Smartphones'
The Texas congressman is the latest Republican politician to ignore the fact that every single mass shooting, by definition, involves guns.

:headscratch:
... As mentioned above, Fallon isn’t the only person offering suggestions for reducing gun violence that don’t involve curbing guns ― especially in the wake of last month’s mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Herschel Walker, a GOP U.S. Senate candidate in Georgia, had a head-scratching suggestion for preventing future massacres.

“What about getting a department that can look at young men that’s looking at women that looking at social media,” he said.
:wtf:
In addition, the supercut video below shows Fox News personalities offering 50 suggestions for curbing gun violence that don’t involve guns but do include improved fencing and decreased phone usage.

Almost all school shooters expect to die. Stiff penalties are pointless, and armed resistance is no deterrent.

TV news: Texas already allows armed teachers. It has 350K public school teachers. Only about 340, 1/10 of 1%, have chosen to go to school armed.

I think if it was my kid killed, I would definitely put out the pics, painful as it might be. But here's the problem: If you can say, factually and without commentary, that "an 18-year old kid legally bought two assault rifles and lots of ammunition and shot up an elementary school killing 19 kids and 2 teachers" and every person in any level of government doesn't say "we've got to do something about this" then the testimony, the crying parents and brave surviving kids won't make any difference. They frankly don't give a damn.

Uvalde's lying sack of shit police chief says that he intentionally left behind his radio because he wanted both hands free to use his guns as he was the first to charge into the school without body armor.

Sure he did/was. So now he's saying he went to an active shooting scene without body armor and intentionally cut off radio contact with other officers and ran into the school to shoot the bad guy despite being the one to tell everybody else to stand down. Riiiight, that's the ticket.
