The Religion Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I always hated something happening for a reason; no mystery in that. "The reason I didn't finish the casserole was because the power went off." Best reason I can think of.

What's really worse?
A cold, half-cooked casserole.

A God that allows things like the holocaust to happen, or a chaotic universe completely indifferent to humanity, where there's no inherent truth?
Two things I'd suggest here: Read a Bible, or have a séance and call up Mr.B .

"If there is a God, He will have to beg my forgiveness." - Concentration camp prisoner.
Un-named. Hmmm . . . is there a reason for that?

The message carved on the concentration camp cell was unsigned.

The only uncertainty seems to be whether the prisoner was Jewish. But it's very likely.

Did a Jewish prisoner write this quote about God and forgiveness?

Interesting.

It's one of the most intense quotes I've ever read.

I believe I would settle for the former. I don't want to grow up; it causes me to age and get all wrinkled and stuff.

Alas, so many "Born Agains" don't get it right the second time either.

Down in South America, thanks to the Zika virus, health officials are recommending that women put off getting pregnant.
"These include the correct and consistent use of condoms, one of the most effective methods of protection against all sexually transmitted infections," the WHO said.
Naturally, the church is doubling down on ordering women NOT to use contraception.

"The church is doubling down"? Isn't that a rather inaccurate statement? I don't see any "ordering" in your link.
"The use of contraception is a controversial issue in the region because of the Catholic Church's stance against it."
"However, the Church has rejected calls from liberal Catholics for a softening of its position on the issue in light of the outbreak."
"It" is the Catholic Church's stance on birth control, period, not just a temporary lifting of it's ban.
"Rejecting calls" - - - yes. "Doubling down - - - hardly."

I don't get the RCC banning birth control, nor do I think it has the authority to tell it's congregants how to run their lives. I can see a disapproval of abortion; I believe all churches do that. There again, in cases or rape, incest, or deformity, a woman should have the right to decide. The churches says life is precious. Of course it is; if that life can lead a fulfilling life.

Not in the least. A major new reason to use birth control has emerged. Health officials are recommending that women use it for now. The church has responded by telling them that even in a face of all reason and common sense, they shouldn't use it.

And to drive it home they equate birth control with abortion.
They are taking advantage of this moment to reintroduce the abortion topic," Bishop Leonardo Ulrich Steiner, secretary general of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference, told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper.
Seth Milner wrote:I don't see any "ordering" in your link.
Of course you don't. That's your specialty. But not only is its obvious for those with an ounce of honesty, it's central to what the church is saying.
Seth Milner wrote:I don't get the RCC banning birth control,
In more educated countries, the Catholic Church isn't opposed to birth control. It even often recommends it.

With the Church's pedophile exchange program facing more opposition in North American and parts of Europe, they've been sending their known pedophiles to shove religion up the asses of kids in South America. Small wonder that they have the same amount of contempt for second and third world people when it comes to birth control and health care.

Well sure. In Quebec the Duplessis Orphans in Quebec were a good example.

Quebec at the time was absolutely dominated by the Catholic Church. Maurice Duplessis, the premier of Quebec, was a strict Catholic. The church ran orphanages, and Duplessis signed an order changing orphanages into hospitals in order to provide them with federal subsidies. The point being that there were subsidies from the federal government for building hospitals, but not orphanages. Also the federal government paid $1.25 a day for orphans, but $2.75 a day for psychiatric patients.

And so seven religious orders declared 22,000 orphaned children to be mentally ill. Schooling stopped. Orphans became inmates in a mental institution where they were sexually, physically, and mentally abused by lay monitors and nuns. But it was financially very lucrative, and that's what counted most.

Morality at the time meant that when a woman or teenage girl got pregnant, all anyone knew was that she "went to stay with relatives in the country" and returned a few months later. And another baby was abandoned on the church doorstep, and the church got more income. Birth control - or even more immoral, teenage mothers taking responsibility for their children - is stealing income from the church.

Honesty. . . ? What in hell has honesty® got to do with anything in what I see or don't see in that article?
Mimic Vrede too much? Oh wait, never mind. . . . I already know the answer to that.

Oh, right. The wingnut creed: It's impossible for more than one person to disagree with your goddamned stupid claims, so they must be the same person or conspiracy.
