2026 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Things have already gotten spicy in Texas. Glad I'm not there.
James Talarico Brands Ken Paxton 'Most Corrupt Politician In America' Following Runoff Election
In a video posted to social media, Talarico described Paxton's corruption as the "rot at the core of this broken system."

... “Three years ago, Ken Paxton was impeached by his own party for using his public office to enrich himself, and his donors, at the expense of the people,” Talarico said in an accompanying video on X. “That kind of corruption is the rot at the core of this broken system.”

... Numerous Republican senators had cautioned Trump against backing Paxton, with The New York Times reporting last Tuesday that many were “livid” at the president’s endorsement.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) told reporters at the Capitol last week that she was “supremely disappointed” in the president’s decision, adding that propping up the scandal-ridden Paxton could cost the GOP a safe seat in the upper chamber.

“I think that this puts that seat in jeopardy,” she said....

Lindsey just won renomination for his sixth Senate term. He's whining that this was the nastiest primary he's ever been though  . He would know. Almost all of the nasty ads I saw were attacking Lindsey's opponents. Hmmm.

So I guess that means that trump actually did pay Rudy and Todd Blanche, eh?
What do Rudy and Blanche have to do with the endorsement?
Nothing. Just that they were defense lawyers (for trump) and lost their cases. My point was that you saying "defense attorneys represent just about anyone who will pay them" struck me as funny because, one, they represented trump and lost. And, two, trump has a long history of not paying people who work for him. At least Emil Bove got a federal judge job; Rudy is in the hospital and Blanche is a laughingstock.

In Los Angeles County, a little over 50% of registered voters are Democrats, and about 25ish percent each of repugs and unaffiliateds. Of the 5 political districts in the county, 4 Supervisors are Dems, 1 is a repug. In the Los Angeles city council, there are 14 Dems, 1 unaffiliated and Zip Nada Zilch repugs. Repugs aren't very popular; Pratt ran as a repug, basically as a one-issue candidate (fires and related response). Pre-election polls generally showed Pratt to be within reasonable striking distance of making the runoff, but no poll ever projected him to win, and most polls had him in the margin of error.

So let's summarize:
Twice as many Dems
Unpopular repug party
No reasonable expectation of win

Yeah, sure. Election was rigged and Dems cheated.

Pratt's entire "career" has been about gimmicks to make him famous. He never had any intention to win and lead the city. RepuQs picked a dumb bandwagon to jump on.

It's finally over. Hilton (GQP) will face Becerra (Dem) in the Gov runoff.
91% of votes counted
Xavier Becerra Dem 2,390,780 27.9%
Steve Hilton GOP 2,137,993 25.0%
Tom Steyer Dem 1,928,381 22.5%
Chad Bianco GOP 874,424 10.2%
Katie Porter Dem 373,532 4.4%

I hope Katie Porter's political career isn't over, but it might be. Back to being a law prof or another regulatory role?

Katie has some of the baggage Elizabeth Warren carries - that of having a strident personality and a scoldy presentation. Any generally likeable candidate could have survived the instances of bad behaviour that helped to tank Katie. Instead of "I'm sure yelling at staffers was just a bad day" she got "Bitch treats people like shit." Maybe not fair, but perception counts.
JMNVHO

Even with that, though, it's pretty shocking that she got half the votes of the second place (somewhat loony) repug. I'm guessing she's done.

That's a shame about the bitchiness. I wasn't following closely.

-0-? At some point Dems had to choose between Becerra and Steyer, even if they really preferred Porter. She's probably done statewide, but may have a shot at local govt or getting back in the House sometime.

A primary election incident has been discovered in California where an election worker opened a vote collection box without authorization and made copies of some ballots. OMG! Just what the right wingers have been praying for eh? Well maybe not. This occurred in Shasta County, home of Redding, arguably the reddest county in the state and where the hard core right has literally taken over. Probably it will be ignored by MAGA.

A story in the local newspaper this morning shows Roy Cooper ahead in the NC senate race to replace Tillis. Not surprising to me as Cooper was a pretty good governor and Whatley is not only unknown, but not an overly impressive candidate. What was surprising is how close the race appears to be.

Dementia Don has lost the magic?
Billionaire Rick Jackson defeats Trump-backed Burt Jones in Georgia governor race

Republicans in Georgia just proved that one thing can overcome the power of President Donald Trump's endorsement: an endless stream of cash.

Health care executive Rick Jackson defeated Trump-backed Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in Georgia's GOP gubernatorial primary Tuesday, with the help of over $100 million of his personal wealth.

Jones' loss is a major upset for the president in a marquee battleground state, and it follows several high-profile Trump losses in 2022, when his candidates either lost their primaries or the general election. The result is also a rare blunder for Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who joined Trump in endorsing Jones to be his successor ahead of Tuesday's primary, after months of sitting on the sidelines of the race.

Remarkably, neither Trump's nor Kemp's widespread influence could overcome the blunt force of Jackson's spending.
:violin: :violin: , but "Remarkably"? Money does still talk . . .
... In November, he will face Democrat and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who has already kicked off her general election bid alongside Sen. Jon Ossoff.

Jackson, a Georgia native septuagenarian who often shares his story of drifting through the foster care system as a child, amassed his fortune in the health care industry. His successful bid for the GOP nomination is his first run for public office....
 I am so sick of the inexperienced running for high office.

Otoh,
Trump-endorsed Mike Collins wins Republican Senate runoff in Georgia

A long and complicated primary runoff race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination has finally come to an end.

U.S. House Representative Mike Collins defeated former college football coach Derek Dooley Tuesday night. Results showed an incredibly tight race soon after polls closed, but the gap grew larger as ballots were tallied.
Election fraud, obviously.
... In response to Collins' win, Ossoff went back to some of his key talking points with the addition of the Trump endorsement.

"Donald Trump's handpicked candidate Mike Collins is a notorious bigot, antisemite, and extremist currently under federal investigation for the illegal misuse of tax dollars," Ossoff said in a statement Tuesday night. "Collins, is is only a congressman because his daddy was a congressman, voted to double health insurance premiums for more than a million Georgians, for the Iran War, and for the Trump tariffs." ...
