Atlantic Crossing was excellent - as was World on Fire.

I'll look into Roku. I've probably see them for sale at Costco.
Yes, PBS programs are usually great. And, during the latter phases of the pandemic, the local broadcast PBS stations are showing more and more interesting programs from the UK, Australia, even Denmark. Such as SS-GB, The Indian Doctor, My Grandparents' War, Halifax, Seaside Hotel. The last one is in Danish which I generally find incomprehensible; thank God for subtitles.

Thanks, just ordered one. Should be here in a week and a half (not kidding!). Maybe sooner. IDK.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Tue Jul 27, 2021 9:12 pmhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WVFCVJN/re ... 5W3Z7M82PWUlysses wrote: ↑Tue Jul 27, 2021 9:10 pmI'll look into Roku. I've probably see them for sale at Costco.

Not sure where I watched Foyle's War - very good show
And 800 Words, a New Zealand comedy was a fun watch
Both have lots of International shows

One of the nice things about streaming is besides all the free stuff is that pay services are monthly and affordable. You can binge Netflix for a month for ten bucks, cancel and binge HBO for a month.billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 9:38 amI have also subscribed on and off to Acorn and BritboxUlysses wrote: ↑Tue Jul 27, 2021 9:10 pmI'll look into Roku. I went through a pretty tough recovery from a series of hospital mistakes 3 years ago and started shopping on the internet. By the time I was recovered enough to get out again covid came along. The Amazon Prime deal was too good not to join - in spite of my anti big box attitude. Their Prime tv is the only one I stick with, but mostly for the free shipping and that nearly everything else - I rotate through - HBO, PBS, several British channels and more are discounted if attached to the Amazon Prime account.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 10:02 amOne of the nice things about streaming is besides all the free stuff is that pay services are monthly and affordable. Prime had a lot of good stuff.
I also subscribe to Sling to get live TV. Also, if you know anyone that has cable and is willing to share login info you can get most stuff for free.

Foyle's War shows up on local broadcast PBS on a regular basis. But not currently. I *think* I've watched a bit: he's a British detective/cop, right?billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 9:38 amI have also subscribed on and off to Acorn and BritboxUlysses wrote: ↑Tue Jul 27, 2021 9:10 pmI'll look into Roku. My DVD recorders have been going almost every night to record stuff for later. It can get a little complicated when trying to record a whole series on one or two DVD's though. But I have devised a system that seems to be working as well as can be hoped.

:?: :?:
I don't know what system you have, but on my satellite I just go to "Guide", click on the show and choose the "record series" option, along with "new shows only." I don't know how it works, but it will even find a show on a different station after we've moved. F'rinstance, I record "CBS Sunday Morning" and it somehow knows that when we were in Montana it recorded channel 2; here it's 3; in Oceanside its CBS8. It always knows. It's a murkle, I guess. I think the hard drive has a terabyte of storage.

Re: What are you watching?
Well, I have two Panasonic combo DVD/VCR recorders. They don't have the "record series" option. I did pick up a combo hard drive/DVD recorder off eBay a few years ago, but haven't used it much if at all. It's old enough I doubt it has the capability you mention. I suppose it might.
One drawback to the Panasonic DVD/VCR setup is that the closed captions only work if played back on one of the units. Must be some proprietary method Panasonic uses for that on the DVD's, like a separate track on the DVD that only a Panasonic DVD recorder will see (a Panasonic playback unit doesn't display the subtitles either). It's not that I'm hard of hearing, it's just that some shows they are speaking in heavily accented English where I can miss words. I suppose there are worse things in life.

In technology terms you are at least three generations out of date.
Got rid of my dvds's long ago except for home movie stuff which I converted from vhs to dvd.
But whatever works for you.

The advantage of DVD's is that they are portable. Unlike hard drives, and even worse, internet connections.

Two TB external hard drive, the equivalent of 2,000 DVDs.
$60.00
Pretty portable comparatively.
YMMV.

Re: What are you watching?
Yeah, in the 90's I worked intensively with hard drives. I have some "portable" hard drives like that. But knowing what I know, I trust them as far as I can throw them. YMMV.
And try flinging a hard drive across a room from your couch.

MMDV.
Glad I'm not living in the past.
Why would you want to fling a hard drive across the room?

Damn, man, you ought to get along better with neoplacebo - he still has audio equipment with tubes.

Re: What are you watching?
Hell, the first "computer" (Eniac? or Eatasac) took up the entire basement of some sort of big building and had thousands of vacuum tubes in it. I am using it now. But yeah, my amplifier and phono preamp and cd player all have tubes, some of which are as old as me.....most are 1957-62 and between all twelve of them I've got a little over a thousand dollars in them. Plus about the same in eight spares. All were made in Germany, Holland (the best), or Yugoslavia (original Tesla brand). Hell, I'm a big blast from the past or a big blast as I pass, depending on where I happen to be.

Re: What are you watching?
Tubes are fine for audio, they have certain characteristics that can make the sound more mellow. But for computation? Not so good. Energy intensive and low capacity.
I have a few tube radios; they work ok when they are working. But I doubt Eniac is running these days.
