The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Various groups wanted a ratings system for records so that kids could be stopped from buying music with explicit lyrics. They were quick to say that it wasn't about censorship; they just wanted kids and parents to be informed.

Of course the moment the system was in place, the movement began to purge those records from stores. Because HOW DARE they sell them - even behind the counter and hidden from view - in the same stores where children were shopping!

The same thing happened with television. The TV-14 and TV-M ratings were put in place to inform people, and to move such shows to later in the evening. Again the claim was that the system was not - no sir, not at all - for censorship. But instantly there were demands from folks like Reverend Wildmon, that the network drop those shows altogether. Wildmon also campaigned against Blockbuster Video for stocking NC-17 rated movies.

I'm feeling some blues music, not because I'm blue but on the contrary, I'm feeling quite good. What's your favorite blues songs?

The Sky is Crying, as sung by my daughter, as lead singer in the Red Hots, a blues band in Savannah, Ga. in the early 90's.

If you didn't use your real name you wouldn't have to post things like that. ;) Is she on YouTube? There are more recent "Red Hots" there, so I gave up.

Took me a while to learn how to convert mp3 files to .wmv for youtube, but finally got it. Now I have to figure out how to add a picture.
This was a gig when she was in college.

Nice.
A homeless man joined a busker for a beautiful rendition of 'Summertime'

During a New Year's Eve busking session in Leeds, UK, Jonathan Walker was approached by a homeless man who asked if they could jam together. Walker didn't know whether the man could sing, but he'd seen him on the streets before and decided to let the man join him….

Co-winners because of Beyonce, of course, but I thought Jenna did a far better job.

Bad timing for the New York Times, which published today that "It's a great time to be David Bowie."

That reminds me, I have the September 2001 Delta inflight magazine. The cover pic is the WTC.

In 1971 an American hijacked a Canadian airliner to Cuba.

30 years later Canadian police Googled his name and found him living in New York. New York's finest were notified, and he was arrested.

Note the date stamp on the story: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 | 8:50 AM ET.

Here's the New York Times story from the same morning.

Sure, there's never a good time to find yourself in a New York police station for hijacking a jetliner. But that was bad timing.

And, yet, candyass Justin Bieber lives.
And I've given up trying to understand how Keith Richards is still alive.

If candyass Justin Bieber dies at 67 no one will remember (or admit to remembering) who he was or any of his songs.

In contrast, I still remember an Eagles concert I went to in 1974 or so, plus seeing Joe Walsh before he joined them in 1975.

Never had an opportunity to see them live, until it was too damned expensive to see them live. Woulda been great when I was 20-something.

Gather round children lemme share an eagles story.

Twas out in the far off land of Colorado. Had eaten a bunch of tasty Colorado treats and smoked some of God's best green grass. It was late at night and and some friends and i were sitting around some candles passing round the music device, taking turns picking tunes. JTAs turn arrives, and what does he pick? Peaceful Easy feeling by the eagles. 10 minutes pass and I forget doing this. My song comes on and I get super fucking weirded out. I felt as if I were in a lodge weathering a winter storm on a prairie in Wyoming. I was sure of it. I was not feeling peaceful, nor easy, nor feeling much in general because my face was numb and I couldn't move anything cept fr my hand which was rhythmically shoving mints and popcorn into my mouth.

Only after peaceful easy feeling went off did I again regain my peace and easyness and feelings. It was good to be back in Colorado. Fuck Wyoming.
