Re: Weather
I had to bite the bullet and buy a new winter coat and new insulated boots this year.
I'm not as young as I used to be.
This shit feels colder.

You know it's cold when they're giving Midwesterners tips on dressing for going outside.
Nice coat and booties for the dog too?

Yeah, you probably don't care that the ice rink opened in Coronado.

Heck no, the colder it is the faster he runs. His only problem is ice ball formations between his pads. I clean them out and off he goes.
Always fun to see him stick his face in to 10" of snow, pull out a stick and then lay down and start gnawing on it with a huge smile on his face like it's the greatest thing ever.

So would you feel better or worse about it knowing it isn't real ice?

What Is Synthetic Ice?
Synthetic ice is an engineered skating surface designed to mimic the glide and feel of real ice without requiring refrigeration, water, or constant resurfacing. Though nothing fully replicates the real thing, Glice comes as close as it gets.
Today’s high-quality panels are made using advanced polymer technology that has significantly improved glide performance over earlier generations. Skaters can expect a reliable surface suitable for hockey training, figure skating practice, and recreational use.
Its popularity has grown worldwide, with thousands of installations across more than 100 countries in venues such as resorts, entertainment centers, and community facilities. The technology has also become accessible for personal use, making home setups like garage hockey rinks a practical option for many skaters.

Re: Weather
Better? Not needing refrigeration must be a huge energy saving. I'd want to know whether toxins are released in production or eventual disposal, but aesthetically there's something more fitting about fake ice and palm trees.

I don't know that there's much worry about skating rink toxins when you've got the mess of the filthy polluted river dumping into the ocean 10 miles south.

That photo reminds me of one time about twenty years ago me and this woman I was involved with went to downtown Brevard one day during the Christmas season. There were some Christmas displays in this place and one was a little town scene with fake snow on everything. Anyway, she and I were standing there admiring the thing and I said to her "I have never seen this much cocaine in my life." The elderly couple standing there near us were shocked and appalled.

Looking back on it, I wish I had bent over the display and cupped one of my hands around my mouth and nose and then made a big sucking wind sound, stood up straight, and exclaimed "GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 9:54 amShoulda just told 'em it was powdered sugar.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 7:52 amThat photo reminds me of one time about twenty years ago me and this woman I was involved with went to downtown Brevard one day during the Christmas season. You're supposed to deeply inhale while making a snort sound and say "Good Shit!"neoplacebo wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 4:20 pm

Probably result in at least one heart attack so I guess I'm glad I didn't do that.

That reminds me of some old movie in which Chevy Chase snorts a massive line of cocaine right off the floor, raises up after snorting all of it, with white powder all around his nose and upper lip, and says "I like it." Forget the name of the movie but there was a large Black woman who might have been some sort of voodoo person in the same scene.
