"The Star Spangled Banner" wasn't "born" from this song; only the tune was used when the words were penned. None of the words from "The Anacreontic Song" are found in what is now the national anthem. Had FSK chose the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb", does that mean the national anthem would have been "born" of a child's song? If so, I wonder what was going on when "God Save the Queen" was penned.

Ol' Francis probably would have been in trouble too, except likle the tune he absconded with was already in public domain. The "God Save the Queen/King" tune has been recycled a lot, too.

Rewritten as the tragic love song "Ach Tannenbaum" in 1819 taking the evergreen, a "faithful" fir tree, as contrasting with a faithless lover.

Later turned into the "O Tannenbaum" / "O Christmas Tree."

Later turned into official state songs "Florida, My Florida", "Maryland, My Maryland", "Michigan, My Michigan" and "The Song of Iowa." And many other adaptations.

The scarlet robes are ceremonial. Normally they wear black.

That's been the standard ceremonial dress for supreme court judges across the Commonwealth for centuries. I've always wondered why Coca Cola based their vision of Santa on judges. Company colors and implying good judgement, I suppose.

American Supreme Court justices wore the red robes too. Eventually red with a lot more black, then all black. But the tradition still continues at the state level in some places. Maryland for example.

What - you've got no respect for history and tradition, Seth? The judicial robe and barrister's gown date back to 13-hundred something,and the wigs have been around since 1600 or so. There have been efforts from time to time to change, but to no avail. Meanwhile, don't laugh too hard unless you laugh at the US judiciary, also. Who knows what if anything they wear under those robes?

I'm not laughing; too hard. They look absolutely ridiculous in those gowns, robes or whatever. I never could understand the meaning behind wearing them anyway, unless it's supposed to be some sort of status symbol. (too lazy to look it up, Vrede will do it for me) Status, schmatus, they're no better than you and me, just paid more.

I don't really care what they wear or don't wear under their robes. I have wondered about kilts though.

It's symbolic of position, Seth. Has nothing to do with whether the individual is better or worse than the rest of us. Same as business people wearing a tie if they're management, or for that matter the same as military uniforms and insignia, cop hats and badges, or even a polyester shirt with a fast food logo on it. Shows position and sometimes authority or lack thereof.

It won't be truly gender neutral until the country name is changed to 'Canade' or 'Canadi'.
