The Cinema Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I'm unaware of any real world evidence that White are saviors of nonwhites any more than nonwhites are saviors of themselves or of Whites, yet it's the first option that's most often depicted in the movies.
I don't know any evidence one way or the other, either, but if, in general, white people have been more privileged, more powerful, and more wealthy, then it stands to reason that non-white people have been more abused, less privileged, less wealthy, etc. So, IRL, who would likely be the one needing saving? In a cursory look through the White Saviour list, it seems to me that some have been included that, while technically having a "white saviour" lead, do not belong on a list critical of the type. For example, the ones based on real events shouldn't be criticized for portraying what really happened. I guess we could have "Blindside" changed to a story starring J C Watt, with the mother role played by Kerry Washington. Or maybe the Cool Runnings Jamaicans could have found another black bobsledder to "save" them. Or maybe the film could have been about some likeable hard-trying but low skilled white team. True, the Avatar people were "of color" although blue isn't that common, but the white guys in general were the bad people. And the "white saviour" was able to help them because he had information about the invaders the blue people didn't have. I we could just leave Jake out of the story and let the Na'vi be attacked and successfully save themselves, but the storyline might be a little flat.

Maybe the list authors have a point that the (mostly white) film producers have made too many films with (mostly white) heroes to sell to a (mostly white) audience. But I think that "...white savior stories have been described as "essentially grandiose, exhibitionistic, and narcissistic" fantasies of psychological compensation." is a bit of a stretch.

If “white people have been more privileged, more powerful, and more wealthy,” who is more likely to have caused the need for saving?
Don’t people and groups most often save themselves?
Where are all the movies about nonwhites saving other races, especially whites? There are plenty where nonwhites somehow save the entire world, but ones where they save select groups are pretty rare.

“the ones based on real events” are still a choice as to which real events to make movies about or not, even if they are great movies about great real events.

I’m not going to even try and defend every academic description of them. My opinion is that the theme exists, a lot, and there’s no harm in recognizing it and supporting alternative views of the world when they come along.

Although it was mostly the white guy, there were plenty of episodes where Cochise saved various white people.

Somehow I'm guessing it have more to do with the dominant race, culture, whatever. Probably more Latin heroes saving everybody in South American movies and tv and more blond saviors in Sweden.

So we really haven't gone to many theatre films for a while, for a variety of reasons, and don't have a backlog of films we'd like to see. Anybody have any favourites or recommendations that are on Netflix, Fandango, or other streaming?

So I see that serious cases and death from coronavirus are disparately affecting Black people, up to 70% in some places. There seem to be a variety of reasons for that, including poor medical access, treatment discrimination, poor nutrition and significant health issues like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc., greater liklihood of having a job that can't be done remotely or pays sick time, etc. etc.

Anyway, hopefully whoever eventually develops a cure/vaccination won't be a white guy or it will just turn into another "white saviour" film.

I doubt that it would be added to any white savior list unless s/he comes up with a treatment that's specific to blacks. Even then, the "saved" groups are usually limited in size and personally connected to the savior, not a worldwide nonwhite population.

Most likely here a cure/vaccination would come from a team that's multi-racial. However, I might bet on it coming from a team in Asia, anyhow.

If the developer of a cure/vaccination is black, no movie will be made :P . Or, it will be 55 years from now.

Beforeigners - be interesting (Netflix I think)

Rectify - I couldn't stop watching - eye opening about the effects of rape (again - Netflix I think)

the Durrells in Corfu - PBS

Thanks - we've seen Durrells. You've mentioned Rectify before - we'll take a look.

Just saw a news report about Easter services held in parking lots with people staying in or at their cars. I wonder if the few remaining drive-in movie theaters will reopen or if people will set up makeshift ones on big walls.

Documentary on the life and works of comic genius Buster Keaton, directed by Peter Bogdanovich.
    - as much for Keaton as for this doc about him.
I've seen all of Keaton's films - he's great. I'll have to watch this.
On TCM tonight, 12 am ET.

Men in Black 3

I liked 1 & 2, not sure how I ever missed seeing 3, but I did. I guess 2 had the worst ratings, but it's been so long that I can't compare. 1 had the best ratings, the usual for a series.

Usual yes, but there are many exceptions. Here is someone's list of 35.

"Road Warrior", "Terminator II", yes. Didn't know "Silence of the Lambs" carried on a previous story. The writer touched on it, but I think there's a difference in a "sequel" or "prequel" that continues a story, (sometimes with different characters) and a different story with the same characters. For example, James Bond is James Bond, even with different actors, and each story stands alone. But the characters remain the same. Same with "Christmas Vacation." And some others just glom the same setting into a different story and characters.

I agree that the Bond movies are stand alone, but not so much the lampoon vacation movies. To me, those are all poor copies of the first good movie.

I'd agree, except for "Christmas." That was funny and entertaining, with a good story regardless of whether you'd seen the original. But still, put side by side and required to pick one, I'd take the original, too.

Not what I meant, but still . . .
These brides got married at a drive-in movie theater after coronavirus canceled their original wedding plans
...

"... Instead of a magical ceremony under a beautiful oak tree facing a 1920s historic mansion, we stood in a gravel-paved parking lot off of a farm road surrounded by 90 cars. Instead of a boujie cocktail hour with the perfect blend of music, food, drinks and fun, we enjoyed popcorn, mini corn dogs and soda with our kids with no idea of who was actually attending our wedding.”

... Because of the number of cars allowed at the drive-in, Bri and Lindsey were even able to invite more people than originally planned.... "... The car limit was 90 slots and I’m 99 percent sure we got right up to the limit. All in all, I’d say there were about 150 people. All safe, compliant and in their cars with people they’d been quarantined with.”

... “Love is enough.”
