Single hurricane thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Ex-Dorian Slams Canada at Cat 2 Strength; Cat 3 Typhoon Faxai Pounding Tokyo

Hurricane Dorian rampaged through eastern Canada overnight after making landfall in eastern Nova Scotia at 6:15 pm AST Saturday as an extratropical cyclone with Category 2 winds of 100 mph and a pressure of 958 mb. At landfall, Dorian’s wind field was huge, with hurricane-force winds that extended out 115 miles from the center and tropical storm-force winds that extended out 310 miles.

Dorian’s powerful winds and storm surge caused extensive damage in Nova Scotia. According to Environment Canada, Dorian knocked out power to over 500,000 customers in the Canadian Maritime Provinces; 400,000 of these cases were in Nova Scotia—about 80% of the province--which may be their all-time record. Tree damage was very heavy, and a large construction crane in Halifax collapsed over a building during the storm (video here)....

Ex-Dorian the third strongest hurricane or ex-hurricane to hit Canada

According to the NOAA Historical Hurricane Tracks website, only four Category 2 or stronger hurricanes have made landfall in Canada since records began in 1851. The site does not list any ex-hurricanes that hit Canada with Category 2-strength winds. Dorian’s landfall intensity of 100 mph winds is thus tied for the third-strongest winds of any hurricane or ex-hurricane to hit Canada. Here are Canada’s four Category 2 hurricanes of record:

Hurricane Ginny of 1963, which made landfall in southwestern Nova Scotia as a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds.

Hurricane Gerda of 1969, which made crossed into New Brunswick Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds after making landfall in eastern Maine.

Hurricane Michael of 2000, which made landfall in Newfoundland as a Category 2 storm with 100 mph winds.

Hurricane Juan of 2003, which took a worst-case track and hit Halifax, Nova Scotia as a Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds, killing 8 and causing $200 million in damage--Canada’s most expensive hurricane on record....

U.S. denies protective status to Bahamas hurricane evacuees

The United States will not give temporary protected immigration status to people from the Bahamas who evacuated after the archipelago was battered by a Category 5 hurricane, the White House said on Wednesday.

The status would have allowed Bahamians to live and work in the United States while their country recovers from the worst hurricane in its history....

About 2,500 people are feared missing in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian, raising concerns the death toll may significantly rise beyond the 50 reported so far.

State and federal lawmakers in Florida, which has the largest population of Bahamians in the United States, asked U.S. President Donald Trump to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to let evacuees live with relatives.
As we all know, Florida is a red state that does not take immigration/refugee issues lightly.
... But Trump on Monday said the Bahamas had "tremendous problems" with allowing "very bad people" into the country and had "very bad drug dealers."

Trump did not say where these immigrants to the Bahamas were coming from, but many Haitians live in the islands, especially on now-devastated Great Abaco.
Black "bad people".
"Everybody needs totally proper documentation," Trump told reporters.
They are devastated evacuees, moron, and govt is barely functional.
Administration data shows the Caribbean plays a small role in the narcotics trade. Critics have accused Trump of demonizing Bahamians to stop non-white immigrants entering the United States....
:obscene-birdiered: POSPOTUS is being a racist liar, again.

Tell Congress: Grant TPS for the Bahamas now

As you know, staying on I-10 with no break can drive you nutz. Over many years, I think I've driven every mile of I-10 from Jacksonville to El Paso and very little of it is fun.
I've driven that I-10 drive myself, except from Jax to Colton, CA. That has got to have been the most expensive interstate in the U.S. to build, what with the almost continuous bridge across Louisiana!
I tried to find stats, but gave up.
I'm sure Louisiana was done on the cheap, it's like a goddamn rollercoaster. I've only done the El Paso to Jacksonville stretch, but I've done it way too many times.
Might be closed "for months" due to Imelda creating runaway barges that damaged bridges.

That part of I-10 was outside Houston. Did Louisiana have loose barges too?

I think the bridges are screwed in TX, but I wasn't paying full attention to the TV news.

Maybe we need an 'Assholes' or 'Trump Admin* Assholes' thread.

It's a shame that so many LAWS regarding govt operations don't have criminal penalties for willful noncompliance.

Hurricane Tweet That Angered Trump Wasn't About Trump, Forecasters Say

When officials at a government weather forecasting office assured Alabama residents that a September hurricane would not hit their state, they did not intend to contradict President Donald Trump’s insistence that it would, according to newly disclosed documents.

Instead, they were answering a deluge of questions from Alabama residents whose concerns had been raised by Trump’s statements....
This whole sad episode is a metaphor for the entire Dolt .45 presidency*:
Rejection of science;
Rejection of truth;
Incorrect and dangerous statement by POSPOTUS;
Decent government professionals just trying to do their jobs in the interests of the American people;
Threats of punishment for these professionals;
Snowflake Dolt .45’s delicate ego and being too cowardly to admit error;
Lies and coverup;
Adoring Trumpettes unable to face the reality about their idol;
Do it all again the next week.

Assholes.

Good point. Some can run sooner and faster to where there are hotel rooms, if any are allowed to open, but what will the evac shelters do?

The moron did suggest dropping nuclear bombs into hurricanes to stop them.
Yes he did.
