There used to be mugshots in post offices; FBI mugshots, big boy stuff. I never notice them these days when I am in a post office. I guess they took them down due to a good many of those in the mug shots work at the post office. Nobody thinks to look for them there.

It was slightly interesting because it's so strange to see public photos of people who probably, save for a few who smile for the camera, are hating their lives at the moment the camera clicked. Kind of strikes me like the old stockades that used to be legal here in America....

Could be that the HT-N does it more. It's a dying newspaper, as many in small cities are. It kinda sucked even before that, so it’s not something we need pointed out to us. We live with it, or read the Asheville, Charlotte or Raleigh papers, instead.

It’s nonsensical to compare the solidly urbanized Bay Area with largely rural WNC, anyhow. For example, it’s pretty useless to mention that the murder and violent crime rates per 100K people for Alameda County are 7 and 629 compared to 3 and 121 for Henderson County, NC.

And I still maintain until now I have known of no California newspaper that publishes mug shots. Now I know there is at least one newspaper/website that publishes mug shots, but at but a fraction of the volume that BRN does.

The San Diego paper claims it publishes one mug shot a week of dangerous persons in the interest of public safety. I wonder what the justification on BRN is of publishing the mug shots of what look to be like petty thieves, or unfortunates whose threat to public safety was to violate probation on misdemeanor charges.

But who knows, maybe it will catch on. Maybe the new America under Trump will bring back stockades too.

Where are these "scores of mug shots day in, day out"? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place but I only found this page: Crime
17 mug shots over 3 1/2 months. I could be wrong, but I don't think we have anywhere near "scores of" arrestees daily to take pics of here. 14,600 (40 x 365) or more for a retiree county with only 117K people seems like a lot, especially now that neoplacebo moved away .

Thank you. I'm pretty sure that I've seen mug shots in newspapers my entire life and everywhere I've lived, including the East Bay, but I figured that it would only be fair to Ulysses to check and see if current East Bay papers were the exception. We'll see what he says now.

Doesn't matter to me whether any or all papers publish any or all mug shots, although it does seem a bit of a waste to use space on petty crime pics. But maybe the Hendersonville paper still has some version of what used to be called the "Crime beat" that had a reporter assigned to collect and report on arrests. There are several places in a newspaper that I just glide right by, and wouldn't know much about their content. Obits, weddings (in those papers that still carry them), real estate (except for occasional shock value), etc.

On the other hand, I don't really see the problem with using a mug shot in the report. Sometimes it can even bring back some fading fame...

The "Corona virus [sic]" is nothing to sneeze at ( ), but its serious illness rate for the infected is around 10% and its mortality is around 2%. Pretty crappy "weapon" if you ask me.
