Re: Cawthorn
That's sort of an odd connection: two modern GOP representatives, from different states, compared to a Star Trek episode with apparently a number of variations. The Kobayashi Maru being some sort of doomed space craft story, the purpose of which was to train new Starfleet commander/recruits. I guess. I enjoyed Startrek in my early teens, but... got tired of Kirk's histrionics.

Re: Cawthorn
I had to look it up.
"The Kobayashi Maru scenario was an infamous no-win scenario that was part of the curriculum for command-track cadets at Starfleet Academy in the 23rd century. It was primarily used to assess a cadet's discipline, character and command capabilities when facing an impossible situation, as there is no (legitimate) strategy that will result in a successful outcome."
Yep, with Cawthorn and McCarthy, there is no strategy that will result in a successful outcome.

It's the ultimate no win scenario.

Re: Cawthorn
You'd think in real life, the new recruits would have been informed through the gossip mill that there really was no workable solution to the KM dilemma. Just something the ST writers dreamed up to puzzle teen fans.

They all knew.
And it was a character test.

Re: Cawthorn
Why?
It was to see how people responded to extreme duress to assess how they might react to the dangers of space travel.

Re: Cawthorn
Yeah, sorry. Makes no sense. If they all knew it was bogus, then why should they care, other than to play along with the flawed premise?
Kind of exposes a teen mindset, though. Congrats!

The Federation is a much safer place without you on a Starship.

Awww.

I can't help noticing that your clever application of Kobayashi Maru to the real world sailed over Useless' head and that he entirely shunned dealing with it and chose to derail the discussion, instead.
They all knew that no one had solved it. It wasn't clear to me that they knew it was unsolvable. I took it that it was Kirk's genius that led him to this fact and thus his "cheating" the cheat test.

There we go, first childish insult in what had been a legit theoretical chat. Poor thing.

Question cowered from, as usual.Vrede too wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 10:15 pm... What rule book are you referring to? IMO, one with zero authority on the matter, wishing ain't threatening.
