Re: The Music Thread
I've been a fan of the Eagles for many years - saw them when they were new, saw their "last" concert in Toronto, then saw them a couple of times after "Hell Freezes Over." I'm not surprised they're among the best selling American bands. I might have guessed Michael Jackson?

Re: The Music Thread
I wondered. I'm guessing that solo performers don't count as bands. Close, though, but you forgot The King.
List of best-selling music artists
250 million or more records
The Beatles
Elvis Presley
Michael Jackson
Madonna
Elton John
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
200 million to 249 million records
Rihanna
Mariah Carey
Celine Dion
AC/DC
Whitney Houston
Queen
The Rolling Stones
ABBA
120 million to 199 million records
Bruce Springsteen (did solo and other bands besides E Street)
Bee Gees
Kanye West
Barbra Streisand
All solo performers and non-US bands above.
Eagles
Total available certified units - albums, singles (including digital downloads) and videos: 128.8 million
Claimed sales: 150 million. There's that number , shouldn't have had a "$" in the article.
U2
Billy Joel
Phil Collins
Aerosmith - There's the US band closest to The Eagles.
Found this:
"In early 1976, the (Eagles) released their first compilation album, Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975). The album became the highest-selling album of the 20th century in the United States, and has since sold 29 million copies in the U.S. and 42 million copies worldwide. It stayed the biggest seller of all time until it was taken over by Michael Jackson's Thriller following the artist's death in 2009."

Re: The Music Thread
Getting into much of a discussion about who is greatest or best-selling (even with some data) is a lot like arguing over best Nascar driver. Conditions have changed so much over the years that even with a theoretical apples-apples match, it's hard. "Number of records" is nice, but it's been a long time since there were any "records" and really not even any CDs anymore. Sales sound like a good measure, but "records" used to be $3-5 for an album, then CDs were $10, etc. Maybe number of "paid copies" that could be in any medium and for any price might do it, but they probably don't have that count. Bottom line to me, though, is the "greatest" is a matter of opinion and taste, as well as some evaluation on their role in musical creativity, not sales.

Re: The Music Thread
I liked The Eagles just fine and saw them in 1974 or 75, pre-Joe Walsh, and liked them even more with Joe Walsh, but they're not the "greatest" in my book except arguably as best selling among US bands.

Legendary Musician, Rock and Roll Pioneer Chuck Berry Dies at 90
If there's an afterlife it's Reelin' and Rockin' today. How long before someone writes and records "Roll Over Chuck Berry"?
