The Religion Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Actually, Satan did indeed "tempt" Jesus, but Jesus did not succumb to the temptation. Thus the name of the myth "The Temptation of Christ" and not the "Attempted..." Not that it matters. Assuming God to be all-powerful, all-knowing, and always "has a Plan,' then the whole situation was rigged from the start.
Satan knows his time is short.

Here's a good one; I feel it belongs in this religion thread. Lots of people are figuring on storming the secret Area 51 site to find out just what's going on there.
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/hundred ... 11786.html

I feel this is a momentous occasion and that Bob Dylan should rewrite the old Highway 61 song in honor of it, like this:
God said to Abraham "kill me a son."
Abe said "man, you must be puttin' me on."
God said "no."
Abe said "what?"
God said "you can do what you want Abe, but the next time you see me comin' you better run."
Well, Abe said "where you want this killin' done?"
God said "out at Area 51."
3M have signed up now  . Those AF warnings are working great.
There's a Warning for the Thousands Who Signed Up to 'Storm Loch Ness' Because 'Nessie Can't Hide From Us All'

As the world—and the U.S. military—waits to see if any of the nearly two million people who signed up on Facebook for the Area 51 raid actually show up to invade the military installation to hunt for aliens, the viral story seems to have inspired a similar event overseas. This time, though, they aren’t on the hunt for extraterrestrial life hidden by the government, but for the Loch Ness monster.

Over 19,000 people have signed up to “Storm Loch Ness” on Facebook, saying that “Nessie can’t hide from us all” and that “The time is now for us to find dat big boi”. Another 40,000 say they are “interested” in the event scheduled to take place on September 21st.

The volunteer Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) crew who monitors Loch Ness really hopes that no one actually shows up, according to the BBC, as they don’t have the resources of the U.S. military, which is fully prepared to fend off any jokester planning to actually storm Area 51.

The RNLI spokeswoman reminded anyone considering an invasion that Loch Ness is chilly, with an average temperature of just six degrees Celsius (42 Fahrenheit) and “that conditions [can] deteriorate quickly on the loch” making rescue a challenge, especially if 19,000 people actually show up to hunt for the Loch Ness monster. While their lifeboats are big, they aren’t that big....

Might be more promising to storm the regional IRS office that NY tax returns are sent to. It's probably less secure. As for religion, today I drank three gallons of holy water and ate a shitload of holy crackers. So far, nothing.

Interesting article from 538 about a Pew Research poll regarding what Americans know about religions. Bottom line - past the basics, not much. But not surprising:

"Some groups answered more questions correctly than others. On average, respondents answered 14 of the 32 questions correctly. But people who are Jewish (19 correct responses on average), atheist (18) and agnostic (17) scored the best."

What Americans Know About Religion
U.S. adults generally can answer basic questions about the Bible and Christianity, but are less familiar with other world religions

Image

Looking only at questions about the Bible and Christianity, evangelical Protestants give the highest number of right answers (9.3 out of 14, on average). Atheists and Mormons are among the next highest performers, getting an average of 8.6 and 8.5 questions right, respectively. Atheists and agnostics do about as well on questions about the Bible and Christianity as do Christians overall.

Jews are the top performers on questions about other world religions, getting 7.7 questions right, on average, out of 13 questions about Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism and global religious demography. Atheists (6.1) and agnostics (5.8) also do well on these questions compared with the national average (4.3).

Lots, lots more at the link.

The link leads to this 15-question quiz. Not sure where the 32 question one is, but some of the questions are identical and the results seem similar.

Not much, but I knew the word because Madonna was or is into it :D . I'm 1/4 Jewish and read a lot on it when I was a kid, but all pretty mainstream stuff, not the mysticism.
