Re: COVIDiots
So San Diego County has over 3 million people, about the size of Utah, but has had about 100,000 fewer covid cases than Utah, who didn't even bother to require masks until last month. SD County has only about 30,000 more cases than South Dakota, which has only about 900k people, or about 30% the population of San Diego County. South Dakota is still doing diddly squat about their Sturgis-driven mess. In fact, SD County still has 19% of ICU beds, only 1% off the cutoff to get off the naughty list. But the problem is that we're in the "region" with LA County and Imperial County and others which collectively have theoretically 0% ICU left. So we're never getting out of the doghouse no matter our own numbers.

I would support criminal charges.Police respond as maskless protesters force their way into Erewhon Market in Fairfax (Los Angeles)
... The demonstration comes as L.A. County continues to see a dramatic surge in coronavirus cases, with hospitals overwhelmed. On Tuesday, officials said the county’s hospitals are turning to “crisis care,” meaning they will ration treatment when staff, medicine and supplies are in short supply.
A record 7,181 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in L.A. County on Tuesday — a 1,000% increase from two months ago, public health officials said.
“It’s very frustrating because in L.A. right now we have less than 0% capacity ICU beds,” said one bystander, who gave his name only as Cody. “The least you could do is wear a mask. And I don’t know why you’re trying to attack a business that’s just trying to survive during the pandemic.”
Newsom gives coronavirus update as California hits new 1-day COVID-19 death record, with 442 fatalities
California broke the single-day record for COVID-19 deaths yet again Tuesday, logging 442 fatalities in a Times county-by-county tally of local health jurisdictions — a number equivalent to someone dying of the disease every three minutes.
More than half of those deaths — 242 — were of Los Angeles County residents, according to The Times’ survey. That’s a record high in a single day for the nation’s most populous county, a count boosted in part by a backlog of reports from the Christmas weekend.
At that rate, cumulative COVID-19 deaths will likely exceed 25,000 in California on Wednesday and 10,000 in L.A. County by New Year’s Day. As of Tuesday night, California had a cumulative 24,987 deaths and L.A. County, 9,806. Over the past week, the state averaged 240 deaths a day, and L.A. County, 111.
The climbing death toll has changed daily life throughout Los Angeles. In East L.A., the Continental Funeral Home has seen its typical caseload more than quadruple, with 80% of its services honoring people who died from COVID-19. The L.A. County College of Nursing and Allied Health is postponing the admission of nursing students for the spring semester because faculty and staff have been redeployed to county hospitals.

L.A. County hospitals reach the breaking point, turn away ambulances
At Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, the breaking point came Sunday night.
There was not one available bed for at least 30 patients who needed intensive or intermediate levels of care, and the hospital had to shut its doors to all ambulance traffic for 12 hours. Some patients, including the very sick who required intensive oxygen, experienced wait times as long as 18 hours to get into the intensive care unit....

Feucht's fans are feucht.COVID-19 'super-spreader' event feared in L.A. as Christian singer defies health order for concerts
A conservative evangelical Christian singer with a history of defying COVID-19 health mandates plans three days of New Year's gatherings in the Los Angeles area, including stops on skid row and at a tent city in Echo Park, raising fears that the events will be viral "super-spreaders."
Skid row activists plan a car blockade to stop Sean Feucht — a Redding, Calif., volunteer pastor and failed Republican congressional candidate — and his followers from staging what is billed as a "massive outreach" Wednesday evening on skid row, at the height of Los Angeles County's pandemic crisis. Feucht's plans come as California, facing record case counts and a severe shortage of intensive care hospital beds, has extended its stay-at-home order.
Feucht began hosting "Let Us Worship" open-air concerts nationwide to push back against government restrictions on religious gatherings, then broadened his focus to cities that erupted in protest after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Feucht's events have featured hundreds of maskless worshipers tightly packed together and singing and dancing....

Re: COVIDiots
Many front-line workers refuse Covid vaccines as distribution struggles
... About 50 percent of front-line workers in California’s Riverside County have refused to take the vaccine, Riverside Public Health Director Kim Saruwatari told The Los Angeles Times on Thursday. California is currently overwhelmed with cases as hospital staff in Southern California face a shortage of intensive-care units and have created makeshift units.
Vaccine development and distribution has been the target of persistent conspiracy theories and disinformation on social media, although it's unclear how much impact this anti-vaccination movement has had on overall public trust in the process.
About 2 in 10 Americans are certain they will not change their mind about refusing the vaccine, according to data from the Pew Research Center. And 62 percent said they would be uncomfortable being among the first to receive the vaccine.
Anecdotally, an estimated 60 percent of Ohio nursing home employees have refused the vaccine already, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said during a news briefing Wednesday. It's a stark contrast to the number of nursing home residents who have taken the vaccine when offered, which DeWine guessed to be about 85 percent....
Rollout for the vaccine has already been met with several logistical hurdles as only 2.6 million people have been vaccinated as of Wednesday. A review by NBC News of earlier data Tuesday found that at the current rate, it would take almost 10 years to inoculate enough Americans to get the pandemic under control....
A survey of 2,053 New York City firefighters found that more than half said they would refuse the Covid-19 vaccine when it became available to them, according to a poll released by the Uniformed Firefighters Association this month....

My hospitals required flu and other vaccinations, but that may not be an option with vaccines approved on an "emergency" basis.

If I ran any of those places, there wouldn't be any refusal and still keep your job. If I couldn't fire them, I'd put them on unpaid leave. If I couldn't do that, I'd move their workstation to the far corner of the parking lot and start their work schedule at 4 a.m. Whatever it took. Refuse if you like, but there's a very large price. I'd require vaccination for a drivers licence, for car registration, for getting electric/water utilities.

Tennessee "wins". Congrats, neoplacebo! At least 12 GOP senators to challenge Biden's win
Nearly a quarter of Senate Republicans are officially preparing to challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College win on Jan. 6, a stunning development that demonstrates just how far some in the GOP will go to align themselves with President Donald Trump’s flailing claims that the election was stolen from him....
The 11 senators' efforts are separate from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who was the first senator to announce he would join with House Republicans to object to the certification of the election results.
... Many Republican senators have not indicated yet how they will vote....
The faction of GOP lawmakers includes Sens. Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Mike Braun (Ind.), Cruz (Texas), Steve Daines (Mont.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), John Kennedy (La.) and James Lankford (Okla.), as well as Sen.-elects Bill Hagerty (Tenn.), Cynthia Lummis (Wyo.), Roger Marshall (Kan.) and Tommy Tuberville (Ala.)....
