Australian man fights off deadly snake that attacked him in his car while he drove down the highway
Comments:

... He was able to kill the snake and sped to the hospital to be evaluated for snake bites. When police saw him speeding down the road at 123 kilometers (76 miles) per hour, they pulled him over.
Police called paramedics to the scene, and they confirmed Jimmy was safe and hadn't been bitten.
"It was pretty terrifying, I've never been so happy to see red and blue lights," Jimmy said.

Comments:
Of all the things to expect when you pull someone over, my initial thought is that this would have to be a first for those officers. Then I remembered this is Australia, so it was probably the fourth case of person-speeding-down-the-highway-fighting-with-a-deadly-snake they'd seen that day, and they wished for a funnel web spider just to break the monotony.
Everyone is happy for him except for the snake and the really bitter ex-girlfriend that left it there.

Just wanted to share this one; the 66 is my favorite, but this one is no Mike Pence.

A Russian POTUS is bad enough, a Russian Tesla/Mustang is going too far!

Aside: I looked up fastbacks:
Porsche 356

1950s Warszawa M20
Best of all:
1935 Stout Scarab

I did not know that Teslas come with a selective kamikaze feature.

And then as we move past the luddite fear of "auto"-pilot the story begins to change when auto-pilot is compared to human-pilot with all the distractions, including watching movies on tablets and phones, reading, eating burgers, applying make-up, shaving, etc., that we have always seen in vehicle accidents.Vrede too wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 3:11 pmI did not know that Teslas come with a selective kamikaze feature.

When we make the comparison between a totally or partially distracted tesla driver and totally or partially distracted drivers of old smokers, tesla is safer
https://www.tesla.com/VehicleSafetyReport
"In the 2nd quarter, we registered one accident for every 4.53 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged. For those driving without Autopilot but with our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 2.27 million miles driven. For those driving without Autopilot and without our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 1.56 million miles driven. By comparison, NHTSA’s most recent data shows that in the United States there is an automobile crash every 479,000 miles."
Data is available for every quarter at the link

I'm making a joke about smashing cop cars, not about autopilot.

Did you see the feature on (I think) 60 Minutes about the driverless semis? Spooky, but apparently at least as safe as the average trucker.

I was responding to the article. I don't think that you could really fit in at a luddite get-together.

If it's anything like the cars 4.5 million miles/accident is a hell of a lot better than .5 million/accident.
Even with simple things like cruise control it is so much quicker to react than I am.

I saw that piece about the no driver trucks; they tout them as safer and more reliable than human drivers since the computer does not sleep, eat, or break traffic laws. What they did not mention is what happens when a hacker manages to get access to the truck brain and then takes over, making a high speed maximum whine run into a playground full of kindergarten kids. Better living through integrated circuits.billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 10:41 pmIf it's anything like the cars 4.5 million miles/accident is a hell of a lot better than .5 million/accident.

#1) 1 accident per .5 million miles vs
#2) 1 accident per 4.5 million miles
And you choose door number #1
Okay
#2) 1 accident per 4.5 million miles
And you choose door number #1
Okay

Even worse is when the robo-cars decide to do it on their own. Picture tens of thousands of malevolent vehicles carrying billions of these:neoplacebo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 01, 2020 6:34 amI saw that piece about the no driver trucks; they tout them as safer and more reliable than human drivers since the computer does not sleep, eat, or break traffic laws. Re: The car thread ...
Typical confusion over cause and effect......what I "chose" was to point out how a device capable of massive destruction that is not under human control could be digitally hijacked.....something that cannot happen to a human driver being acted upon by an outside anonymous entity. I do not dismiss the human fallibility concept, the statistical data on accidents, or the ability or propensity for humans to fuck themselves up with alcohol or drugs and then decide to drive. I just make it known that these driverless vehicles have the potential to be taken over by bad actors, especially when you consider that advances in computer technology reveal something not previously known every few years. Motor vehicles basic design concept hasn't changed in over a hundred years.billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Tue Sep 01, 2020 9:38 am#1) 1 accident per .5 million miles vs
