After a series of short hospital stays, the statement said, Carter “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention

Change a few things in the luck of when he's in office and he could have been revered as one of the best Presidents ever. Hell, take away the ill-fated Iran hostage incident, he gets elected to a second term and it might have been truly memorable.

I had an Iranian landlord for my office in Hendersonville. Good guy but he disliked Carter for not propping up the Shah any further. According to him, life was pretty good in Iran until then and he fled shortly after. I know it was much more complicated than that and will have to re familiarize myself with the history.

As an aside, Carter's son Jack lived in my neighborhood in Evanston around 1990 as well as working at the Chicago Board of Trade where I worked once upon a time. He still had minimal Secret Service protection, usually just a driver and another guy.

Never had a chance to chat with him.
