There are or were two versions of Roundup sold commercially. One was a diluted version intended for general homeowner use; the other is a concentrated form intended for large scale or institutional use and is much stronger. My former neighbor retired from Henderson County Schools and had a five gallon bucket of the industrial stuff; he used to give some of it to me and that stuff was certain death and utter doom for all weeds.....and maybe for anyone who used it for an extended period of time.

The original home version of Roundup was the stronger stuff too. I think they changed it sometime around 2000 or so. With the early stuff, I could spray once around trees and in shrubbery beds and they'd stay clear all season. It also killed off poison ivy. Didn't kill larger stuff, but if you got some of it on the leaves the branch would be damaged. The later (current, I suppose) takes more to work, works much more slowly, and doesn't last a season.

Since it's supposed to work by killing the weed down to its root without damaging the ground around it, I'd have to guess that it no longer actually kills the weed, but just weakens it since it's back by July or August.

Wouldn't doubt it can be carcinogenic or some other kind of harmful to someone long exposed to large quantities, but that can also apply to a lot of other stuff.

Also, there were no huge waste lagoons on family farms contaminating ground water and spewing toxins into the air. Any livestock waste was immediately used to fertilize crops.

Unlike lazy people today, small family farms raised pigs for consumption not to generate revenue. So easy for today's consumer to go to the grocery store for pork products. That's the trade off of progress I guess.

Bought a whole halibut right off the boat yesterday, filleted free, $10/lb. Between that and the salmon we already had, the freezer is full. Fresh fish, fresh local veggies, good beer. Life is good.
