President Donald Trump indicated Tuesday that the White House coronavirus task force may soon be wound down.
CNN’s Anderson Cooper and MSNBC’s Chris Hayes put the looming decision down to one thing ― the 2020 election.
“It seems like they don’t want their fingerprints on this,” said Cooper.
“It seems like the federal government, the administration, is trying to pass the buck, pass the responsibility onto the states, onto mayors, onto governors, to anyone other than themselves so that they won’t take the blame come election time,” he added.
Hayes, meanwhile, noted the “incredible disconnect from the rhetoric from the president” who continues to downplay the severity of the pandemic in the U.S., which has so far killed upwards of 71,000 people nationwide.
“Newly reported cases are going up. We don’t really know for sure, but things may be even getting worse,” he said.
“The mission is obviously not accomplished, and it’s becoming clearer and clearer that Donald Trump never even really tried to accomplish it,” added Hayes. “He just wants to open up the country so the economy can come back and he can be re-elected.”
Going back to the start of the pandemic, I don't recall anybody saying that the virus could/would be wiped out through shut-downs, but that the main goal was to keep infections at a manageable level and not overwhelm the hospitals. Generally, that seems to have worked, with apparently only some of the NY hospitals reaching total crisis stage. But nobody also said that when SIYFH orders were lifted, that there wouldn't be a strong need to continue protective practices to keep the infections manageable. I don't understand people not realizing that it's in their own best interest not to get/spread this infection. Sure, it would be easier if infections were tied clearly with symptoms and you couldn't spread it if you didn't have fever, cough, etc., but that's not the way this one works.
Lady O and I aren't prone to irrational fear, OCD, or hypochondria, and we don't really believe we're in constant risk. But we play a largely imaginary game where we live in some post-apocalyptic world with zombies carrying deadly infections all around and toxic chemicals on every surface. We're very careful what we touch, and obviously avoid close contact with people (potential zombies) like the plague they could be. Interesting enough, our game doesn't change our real life very much. We go for a walk and move way out of the way of anybody we encounter, but we're still going for the same walk. A trip to the grocery doesn't become a major life change just because I look down aisles before going in to make sure there are no zombies there, or cover my hands with a fresh produce bag to avoid touching handles, etc.
Some things will be different for a long time, though. I can't see us going back to the gym until after there's a vaccine and few active cases. Even before covid, there were often idiots who showed up coughing or whatever thinking they could "work it out." We've been to our last big crowd event for a long time, but those weren't a major part of our lives.
But why somebody would think it's a good idea to just "go back to normal" when all that toxicity and zombies are running around is beyond me. Nevermind looking out for others in the community - nevermind any SIYFH orders - nevermind whether manicure shops are open or not - just looking out for yourself and your family is going to keep you from doing much stupid. But nooooo.

Yeah, it must be tough being a perpetual victim as well as a clueless dilettante.
