The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Holy shit - always one of my favourites, but that way beyond!
Thanks!

No one, not even Grace, knows what the dormouse said, but it definitely did not say "feed your head." Matter of punctuation, apparently.
Usually heard as "Remember what the dormouse said: "feed your head." Should be "Remember what the dormouse said. Feed your head." Doesn't matter, either way, it's one of the best rock songs ever.

Not bad. I was in love with her and her voice.

Surrealistic Pillow: My first rock record album.
I don't remember what my first rock record was but it was definitely one of the old small 45rpm records. I remember having Beatles records and also "Satisfaction" when it first came out in 65. And I've had the rock and roll fever and boogie woogie flu ever since.

I don't remember the first rock record I ever owned, but I remember going to a record store (that was even pretty old at the time), that had booths where you could play a record before buying it. All the records were in bins you could flip through, organized loosely by genre and then maybe by artist. As I think of it, my first buy might have been "At the Hop" by Danny and the Juniors. I was a big fan of American Bandstand, and that one stayed on top for a long time. Obviously, my taste got better as I got older. Once there was Beatles, I forgot there had ever been any other music before.

I got my own little portable stereo record player when I was about 15. I don't recall getting any 45's, I viewed that format as a rip-off. Plus it was a manual turntable. Anyway, as recall my first albums were Brahms and Beethoven symphonies. Later I found Surrealistic Pillow in the cut-out bin (might be monoral) and got that for a song ($1 or less). Played that over and over, which did not go well with parental unit. But then they didn't like Brahms either.
Youngster. It was all High-Fidelity at my house.

The little stereo was circa 1966.
We got a stereo in 65 or 66.

Pedal or crank, and how did you keep it at the correct speed? ;)

My first album was Ballads of the Green Berets by Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler. Then it was the Supremes. After that there was a flood of rock around 1970 or so, but I can't remember what I got first.

Yes.

Apparently you don't understand the term "manual turntable".

It means a turntable without an automatic record changer. Where you have to manually load and unload records, and manually move the tonearm to the record to start play, and manually lift the tonearm to stop play.

Look it up and get back to me.

By late 60's you could get some really nice equipment, like Pioneer receivers, reel-to-reel tape decks, 3-foot high speakers, and big bulky headphones. Nothing was small back then, but we all thought the sound was wonderful. Turns out, it really was. When I was cleaning out my folks' house, I fired up some Zenith equipment from probably early 70's, put on a good condition 33 album, and was pleasantly surprised and somewhat amazed at the sound.

Once I got out of college and been working for a few years, I finally got my first upper end stereo system: Polk Audio 10 speakers (big, about 2-1/2 x 1-1/3 foot), Onkyo receiver (later replaced with separate Onkyo amp and tuner), and Denon DP-30L semi-automatic direct drive turntable (it lifts the tone arm at the end of the record), and Audio-Technica cartridge/stylus. It all still works, although the Onkyo parts have some glitches now. Haven't fired it up in years, though. Also went through a series of cassette tape decks, none of which seemed to last very long. The Polk 10's have wound up part of the infotainment system attached to a fancy schmanzy Pioneer AV receiver, although I upgraded that to a better Yamaha years ago but still haven't hooked it up. But it's a complete surround sound setup with subwoofer and satellite speakers. I just have kind of lost interest in getting inundated with wonderful sound, for some odd reason. Maybe simultaneous with the rise of the Internet. I dunno. One of these days I'll unpack the new receiver and set it all up again. No big rush. The Polk 10's are interesting because they have two 6"mid-range speakers which hydraulically drive a passive 10"woofer. Or so I'm told.
I still have and use my manual 1970 AR turntable. Beautiful simple walnut cabinet with one switch, the on/off. One disc at a time, no changer and speed changes require removing the turntable platter and moving the belt to a different pulley.

Here are some turntables that cost more than $100K

I've been sort of an audiophile since the early 70's and now use an all vacuum tube system; even my CD player has two 12AX7 tubes for the output stage. It sells for a thousand and the two tubes that I got to replace the original Chinese tubes cost me $230 for the pair. Amplifier has 8 tubes that I have about a thousand bucks in just the tubes; some from 1957. And the phono stage that my turntable runs on also has two tubes. It would cost me about ten grand to replace the entire setup. Some people go way overboard with this stuff, though. Witness the six figure turntables in the link....even some phono cartridges (needle) made by Koetsu or Lyra can cost ten grand.

If memory serves, I paid $99.00 before the 3% sales tax. kenwood tuner, sony with dolby cassette player and Advent speakers. It was hard to beat

Yeah, back in the day you could get a really decent stereo rig for a few hundred bucks. Nowadays there's all this esoteric stuff with astronomical prices. The EL34 tubes in my amplifier at the time they were made (1956-1962) cost about three dollars each. I paid an average of a hundred each for each of the four I have, but they were made in Holland and are now very rare and expensive but they sure sound good.
