Re: The LEO thread
No wonder cops shoot unarmed people all the time, they sure are sensitive.Arby's employee accused of denying officer service speaks out
An Arby's employee in Florida accused of denying a police officer service for being a police officer says it was all a joke, not a refusal of service.
CBS Miami reports that Kenny Davenport, 19, said he was working when Pembroke Pines Police Sergeant Jennifer Martin pulled up to the drive thru window. But he says their interaction was a joke that was taken the wrong way.
According to a police report on the incident, Martin was told by a manager at the restaurant that an employee, now identified as Kenny Davenport, did not want to serve her. The manager allegedly said, "He doesn't want to serve you because you are a police officer."
After the uncomfortable encounter, Martin said she was uncertain she wanted to eat at the restaurant because her food may be tainted. The manager tried to assure her everything was fine, and handed over her food....
Davenport says that he didn't refuse Martin service, but he was so busy he had to ask his manager for help. He said that is when the manager made the unfortunate joke.
CBS Miami previously reported that a South Florida police union called for a national boycott of Arby's after Martin was denied service....
In reaction to the incident, the Dade County Police Benevolent Association is calling for the employees involved to be fired....
Kenny Davenport told CBS Miami he sees little point in explaining himself.
"There's no point in talking," he said. "I'm 19. She's an officer and I'm colored."

Arby's fires manager, suspends clerk who allegedly refused to serve Florida police officer
Firing the manager seems a little harsh for a failed joke, though he did bring national negative PR to Arby's, but why was the busy clerk suspended for the manager's joke?
Can anyone say "PC"?

Re: The LEO thread
The fast-ish food business isn't really known for being the best at employee relations. And you found exactly the point of stupidity. If the only reference to refusal of service was by the manager, he should have been fired and the employee goes free. If the employee did refuse service, and the manager made the "joke" they both should be fired. And on a scale of severity, would it be worse to actually refuse service or to tell the customer the server didn't want to serve him? Regarding employees, anytime food people can find their own dicks, they'll step on them.

Re: The LEO thread
Even if there was a refusal of service, which there wasn't, what's up with the whiny cops making a national case out of it? Contacting the manager would have sorted out the confusion and, if that didn't work, one phone call to corporate would have quickly gotten the local straightened out. Seems like LEO overreaction and bullying to me.
When I was a teen I was in line at, coincidentally, an Arby's when the young server brought a drink to the cop in front of me. She clipped the bottom of the cup on the server side of the counter and managed to spill the entire drink all over the cop's lap area. It was obviously an accident and she was mortified, yet the cop loudly accused her of doing it on purpose.
Maybe it's a decades-long Arby's hatred for cops.

I thought it might have been a bit overblown, too, but what with instant internet posting of everything, it was bound to get out.

Arby's makes decision on clerk accused of denying officer service
... "... we ultimately found that the crew member was not involved other than to attempt to remedy the situation," said the company's CEO Paul Brown in a statement....
Thomas McCutcheon tells CBS Miami he was not happy with how the Arby's controversy has played out so far for his grandson Kenny Davenport.
"I want my grandson exonerated of all this misunderstanding and not to have to look over his shoulder," said McCutcheon....
Kenny Davenport had told CBS Miami he saw little point in trying to explain himself.
"There's no point in talking," he said. "I'm 19. She's an officer and I'm colored."
Correct, but maybe not in the way you meant. Though this CBS article and the Faux Noise article were both published September 4, note that Faux Noise chose not to mention that Arby's had already deemed Kenny Davenport to be blameless, nor did it mention Thomas McCutcheon's demands for complete exoneration.Seth Milner wrote:It sounds fishy. Tell Arby's: stop helping police attack your Black employees
Dear Arby’s CEO Paul Brown,
I’m outraged that Arby’s has disciplined Kenneth Davenport, a young Black employee targeted by a Florida police union. Your company’s own statements say that Davenport did nothing wrong, but your actions imply otherwise. I’m writing to demand that you immediately allow Kenneth Davenport to return to work, publicly apologize to him, and clear his name.
By taking action against Davenport, Arby’s is helping a police union smear the reputation of a young Black man who was simply trying to do his job. Police unions are among the biggest obstacles to accountability for police, it is clear that this was a crude publicity stunt designed to paint police as victims of anti-police sentiment, at a time when police conduct is rightfully under great scrutiny. It is wrong for Arby’s to help a police union attack and damage Davenport’s reputation, over nothing.
Arby’s depends on Black consumers, and it should think twice about throwing its Black employees under the bus just to give police unions what they want.

BBC: Who, What, Why: What is skunk water?
Police departments in the United States are reported to have bought a foul-smelling liquid developed in Israel to repel protesters.
[...]
But the scent can linger on skin and in the environment for days, sometimes longer.... "Afterwards my car stank and my wife made me undress outside the house. One of my cameras was destroyed and the rest of my kit still smells.".... The problem is the way skunk is used. Very often it is a form of collective punishment for a whole area."
[...]
Several US police departments, including the St Louis Metropolitan Police, are reported to have bought it.

Lewisville (TX) Whataburger Employee Refuses to Serve Police Officers
Looks like this one is real, as opposed to the South Florida Arby's joke gone wrong. I won't hold my breath waiting for Seth Milner to defend the Whataburger Employee's conscience and his claims that there's a "right" to not serve cops.
Maybe I should try refusing healthcare to "investigative journalists" or SC retirees and see what happens.

Re: The LEO thread
Good news, everyone! The North Carolina Court of Appeals has clarified the word "historical!"
For the police to track your cell phone in real-time would require a warrant. But there's brief delay between the time your phone "pings" a tower and the time AT&T receives, calculates and forwards your coordinates to police. That makes it "historical" data. No warrant needed! (Ta-da!)

I want to support cops, I really do. Both my daughters are married to good cops and I continue to believe that most cops, while not candidates for Pope, are decent guys and girls trying to do a job that is thankless, at best.O Really wrote:Here's a headline you don't see too often... http://www.turnto10.com/story/30087863/ ... maine-jail
