Yeah, he's dumb, like claiming there really are "American made" cars that everybody can buy when the price of their Tennessee-assembled Hondas become too expensive. But as has been noted before, he's not nearly as dumb as the people who keep believing him and supporting his antics.
Not to mention the delusion of somehow flipping a switch to suddenly manufacture everything here.
The main driver in manufacturing leaving the US was/is labor cost. That's not going to change. So even if a manufacturer thought they could even out the tariffs with higher US labor, prices to everybody would still go way up. And does anybody really want to "good ol'" US auto manufacturers that brought us classics like the Pinto, Vega, and Seville?

It took awhile for leftists to send everything away, huh?

Hey, we all will get to drive K cars again.

That logic is, it's better for foreign labor to make money than for American labor to make money. Then sell back to the American who isn't making any money. Walmart has thrived on that logic.
I get ya though, the lazyass American won't work for a little less. Hell, most don't want to work at all.
And here's another conundrum for ya' - My Wrangler really is made in the US (Toledo), and they make a big deal out of the "Made in USA" bit. But - it's no more of a "real" American car than BMW, Honda, etc. because it's owned by Fiat/Chrysler at Stellantis. Sure it doesn't make much difference who owns it as long as American labor is making it and US cities get the economic advantage. But if they count it that way for Stellantis, they should count the same for BMW and Honda. I think I read that other than the Wrangler, the vehicle most accurately described as "American made" is the Toyota truck.
My Z28 was made in Canada in January 1999. It's now 26 years old, has about 196,000 miles and will still go like hell if I want it to. I also want to point out that it was not "leftists" that sold the US out to China. Nixon started it. Greed supercharged it. Ignorance refuses to realize it. Tariffs will not fix it.
I should be car good for another seven or eight years.
Hope nothing important breaks though, replacement parts are probably imported too.
One of the main reasons the dick suckers voted for Trump in the first place was because of complaints about inflation. Tariffing goods is a sure fire way to experience even higher prices. But I don't think either they nor Trump know how tariffs work, so they likely won't put two and two together.

Yeah, they're cooking up a recipe for stagflation or an inflationary recession.
Good times.

A serious question: how can one hedge against the volitility over the next few years? For the time being I stopped placing extra savings in index funds, opting instead for high yield money market funds.
I'd imagine that even with the tariffs enacted the market would eventually stabilize, but Trump's economic "policy" (or lack thereof, really) is just so schizophrenic that there's no way to accurately predict what's going to happen next.

I realigned my IRA from 50/50 low/higher risk investments to 85/15. Phew. My account manager gently encouraged me to go 75/25. We're talking again in 3 weeks. I'll try to resist an, "I told you so."

The amount of uncertainty probably cannot and will not be easily quantified in the near term.
The last time we had these type of tariffs was 1910 and things are a little different these days.
