If you pay taxes and have a SS card and use the number the guvmit knows all they need to know about you.
I have a friend who I take places because he don't drive, he is old enough to have a SS card that says not to be used for ID purposes and he refuses to use it when asked. People are dumbfounded when he refuses, he does carry a passport and so many people have no idea what it is.

I don't think it's any worse than any other internet site or cell phones. My nieces and nephews persuaded me to sign up. It's a convenient way to keep up with them, and my brother and I enjoy agitating some of them with our leftiness. It has also come in handy for observing the activities of my enemies, whose pages you can't see without logging in. A friend and I developed a good offense to block one of them before she could initiate her plan. It's a handy tool for activists, though not secretive.
There's one glitch I haven't figured out. Yesterday, I had to "unlike" Romney, whom I never "liked." Had to do the same with Visa Small Business and Target.
That being said, I wouldn't post anything meant to be kept secret. If I plan a crime, I won't talk about it on facebook.

How do I unlike a Page?
You can unlike a Page by taking the following steps: 1. Find the post in your timeline that states you like the Page or find a post from the Page in your news feed.
2. Click the "x" located in the top right hand side of the post.
3. From the drop-down menu, click "Unlike Page."
You can also navigate to the Page by entering its name into the search bar in the upper right corner, and click the "Unlike" link located on the lower left hand side of the screen.

Now that there has been a level playing ground created.....let's get it on!
For everyone to play on level ground with you the rest of us old have to dig for a week.

Since the gov. already knows pretty much about me, I'm comfortable with that. I don't want just any Tom, Dick, and Harry to be delving into my personal business such as where I shop, dine out, or "enjoying my go"; therefore I don't post on facebook or other 'look at me' websites. I can't understand why anyone would want to open up their lives for all the world to see. If I want to tell someone something personal, I've got this ingenious device at home called a telephone. If it's not too personal, I carry a portable version in my pocket called a cell phone.

I understand why it might have seemed like a good thing to do back when the internet and forums were fairly novel. You create a forum for readers to discuss current issues.
That's not how it is now. Most of the forum members don't even read the Hendersonville paper. Why should a business have to pay a nanny to babysit 20 adults? Why leave yourself liable to legal troubles?
It just seems like a royal PIA without much upside.
I enjoy them, especially when the mods have brains, but I can't understand why any newspaper is still operating one. I do understand why most papers have done away with them.
I don't understand the way blueridgenow did it, frankly that's not value added. I totally understand having the ability to comment at the bottom of stories, that's user engagement, return visits, etc.
I think they first started the forums back in the 1990's. It probably made some sort of sense then, what with this new thing called the internet, and websites, etc. Then when they got to be bash-feats over the next decade, people began to realize they weren't such a good thing. Now, it's just post Kool Aid misinformation and call names. I don't see the point. If I owned a paper, I wouldn't want to pay an adult to babysit other adults.
SHJ forum was a good forum at one time. There used to be some good debate with light hearted attacks that sometimes got very heated. But, SHJ like so many other businesses in Sparklecity had no management, no vision, no brains. There is a story behind why they went away, I may tell you all sometime. Bottom line was NYT considered the forum a liability.

I thought the NYT sold the SHJ? To Halifax Media or something.

We already know.......the PM has been posted.
And yes it was a liabilty which I am persuing.
What PM do you speak of, and what did it say, I just joined so I must have missed it. Are you saying you have a suit against SHJ and that's why the forum shut down?

True NYT sold the rag to Halifax, just this year, but recent incidents that were forum related happened while still under ownership of NYT. Spartanburg forum incidents were the cause for Hedersonville forum to be taken down as well.

Somewhere on this forum someone posted that PM. CrockHunter pg 3 posted the PM on this thread.

Hey pal, Ditto on your remarks about SHJ. The forum had a great number of posters and like you said, lively debates and more good humor at least a couple of years before it's demise. Too many of the old time posters left for good and most all of them had complained about the mods.
BTW, I didn't know you were on this forum before now. Let the good times roll, eh?

My business is my business.
Oh, that message. The Mods sent those little "threats" out all the time, thinking it would put some fear into certain posters. But that's not "the" reason the forum disappeared.
And if "your business" is "your business" then why did you bring it up on a public forum? ("And yes it was a liabilty which I am persuing.")

It is my experience everybody's job is easy until I have to do it.
I have never moderated a board or run a newspaper. Apparently there is not enough value in the advertising on a discussion board for the SHJ owners to charge a profitable rate.

At one time SHJ forums was booming with advertising. There were always 15 to 20 members logged in at one time and many more guest reading the discussions. Trey Gowdy (7th Circuit Solicitor at the time) as well as Sheriff Chuck Wright, were regular contributors to the discussions. The head of the republican and democrat party in Spartanburg county also contributed to the political discussions. But, the mods didn't understand that the "children" needed to be kept at bay, and they allowed school yard bantering and insults to take the place of good debate.
I hope this forum can tell the difference between "No Censorship" and letting the inmates run the asylum.

Very interesting. So what were the screen names for Gowdy, Wright, and the party heads?
I would also like to know the ad rate per thousand hits or however it is measured.
If the SHJ board was profitable it is very unlikely they would have pulled the plug. Even if it only covered its variable cost I think they would have kept it going.
