The Wall Street Journal reported the president’s name appeared multiple times in a “truckload” of documents reviewed by the DOJ.

Attorney General Pam Bondi told President Donald Trump in May that his name featured multiple times in a “truckload” of documents related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

At a routine White House meeting, Bondi and her deputy revealed to the president that other high-profile figures were also named in files reviewed by the Department of Justice, according to the Journal citing senior Trump administration officials....

“This is another fake news story, just like the previous story by The Wall Street Journal,” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told the newspaper on Wednesday.

The president replied, “No, no,” and said that his attorney general had “given us a very quick briefing,” before pivoting to suggest the controversy surrounding the files is a “hoax.”

The “truckload” of documents do NOT feature Trump multiple times related to his one time best friend, the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and AG Bondage never told Trump that they did.

Way back in the day when I was in Toastmaster's Club, there was a game/exercise during part of every meeting, called "Table Topics" where the MC of the night would start a discussion and then ask various people questions that they probably didn't know anything about. The purpose of the exercise was to learn to respond past "I don't know" and do so without appearing an idiot. But the key is to find some plausible way to link from the direct question to something you do know about so that it isn't quite so obvious as a diverting tactic.

Either of "the Clinton's" might have responded to the pardon question with "that issue is not under any consideration" for example. That says "no" without saying "no" permanently. That isn't the same as "I'm allowed, but haven't thought about it."

And yes, when you're President or President*, little differences matter - including the "meaning of 'is'"

Yeah, picky and petty. But as I mentioned, little things matter when you're president. It's been that way pretty much forever, which is why most successful politicians (and all real leaders) are careful about their public statements. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if the public only looked at actual words in their accurate context, but everybody is looking for "signals" and "messages" and make their own interpretations. Trump just expects everybody to believe it simply because he said it.
