For safety purposes for decades we've assumed that every one had HIV, Hep, etc. Hence, gloves for anything involving body fluids, more if splatter was possible. I can only imagine what 'universal precautions' look like now, but I wouldn't like it.O Really wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 2:08 pmAgreed, but if you knew, for example, that everyone with the virus showed severe symptoms and required hospitalization, then you could release a lot of restrictions in places that don't have any. But since that's not the case, you have to assume that everybody you walk past could be a carrier.

Doesn't Florida have a larger percentage of old people than Maryland? Hell, we've got whole cities of old people.Vrede too wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 1:41 pmAlabama Tops 1,000 New COVID-19 Cases In One Daybilly.pilgrim wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 1:26 pmProtests, trump rally, hair salons, schools, bars and parties -
with this kind of important shit going on, who gonna worry about some damn virus.
Over the past 3 days, Florida has broken 3 records for new cases - we put our reopening to work
On the bright side, Florida is long and skinny and nearly all the cases are 400 to 700 miles away from me.
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/corona ... 13417.html
Just two days after reporting a record number of new COVID-19 cases, Alabama sets another daily record for new cases.
Opps.
Not that I'm provincially bragging. NC still sucks and I'm not sure why. Also, Henderson County is the worst in WNC, though my MD says it's due to the huge number of elder care facilities here.

"MD" there stands for doctor. Idk how Maryland is doing, though I know that its GOP Gov was aggressive with the SIYFH orders and even exchanged words with PINO over it. Maryland hasn't been home for me for 45 years.billy.pilgrim wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2020 5:04 amDoesn't Florida have a larger percentage of old people than Maryland? "Florida contains the highest percentage of people over 65 (17%) in the US."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida
Idk what the figure is for MD.
Blacks have been hit very hard by CV-19 and Maryland is 30% Black compared to Florida's 16%. I believe that Latinos have also been affected worse than Whites.
"49.5% of Maryland's population is non-white and/or Hispanic/Latino, the highest percentage of any state on the East Coast and the highest percentage after the majority minority states of Hawaii, New Mexico, Texas, California and Nevada."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland
53.5% of Florida is "White alone, not Hispanic or Latino".
So, age tends to make Florida relatively susceptible while race makes Maryland more susceptible.

But I thought being old didn't make you catch it any easier, just more likely to have a more severe reaction. Is that not correct?
And I thought a lot of the high instance rate among Black people was due to being in high-risk jobs, not being able to stay home, less able to self-quarantine all due as much to economic status as to actual race. Is that not correct?
Any reports of survivors from majority-Black nursing homes?

My OP was a reference to the ongoing high numbers of deaths in NC and Henderson County rather than positive tests, but I did not make that clear.

It's one factor among chief ones that also include prevalence of underlying conditions, living situations and access to quality health care. AMA and CDC:
https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-car ... d-covid-19
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nc ... ities.html
I may have been wrong about Latinos being at higher risk according to one study cited by the CDC, but it then goes on to also mention them being in high-risk jobs, so idk.

Idk. They've been hit hard whatever the races of patients and staff.

Without testing, or weak testing, we would be showing almost no cases.
Case closed. Stop testing and they'll be no more confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Pandemic solved.

you're testing too much. Eliminate testing and you get zero new cases.Whack9 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 2:52 pmSeveral downtown restaurants are closing down due to the Corona-virus:

It can be completely eliminated by listing Cause of Death in a new Environmental category.

The emerging face of COVID: Younger patients, more cases, but fewer deaths
It may be weeks or longer before we know exactly what this means, which COULD be too late for some states or even the nation.

No mystery - older/higher risk people are doing a better job of taking care of themselves. Younger ones are going to bars.

This is a bit surprising an a lot of bit nuts.
No-lockdown Sweden is compelling parents to send their children to school. Some fear their kids could ultimately be taken away if they refuse.
