Speaking of dumps and minor league ballparks, I went to high school in Sarasota Florida and Payne Park where the White Sox held spring training was about a mile away. We used to sneak off and catch some $3 games. You could chat with the players under the stands when they were smoking cigarettes after their day was done.

Another point:

A lot of people dismiss Oakland and anything in it (like the Coliseum) because of one thing, and one thing only: Oakland's large black population. This is, of course, deplorable, and should never be tolerated. In fact, Oakland's large black population is one of its strengths.

Is that a trumpian "lot of people", intending to paint a picture of great consensus where possibly none exist? Surely there are some people somewhere who think that anything Black people do is defective, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be a mainline view. And with less than 30% Black, maybe there are other reasons to criticize the Coliseum.

Maybe he means "A lot of people" in whiter parts of the Bay Area, places where they call hip hop "thug music" like Useless does.

Idk about absolute numbers, but proportionally Oakland is less Black than it used to be. 43.9% in 1990 when I first lived there, 28.3% now.

I think the pics are from:

... It's not the first time there has been a plumbing issue at the aging stadium, which was built in 1966.

In June 2013, raw sewage flooded into the Athletics' dugout. Later that year, sewage seeped into the coaches' bathroom in Oakland's clubhouse. The following year, the toilets backed up again and flooded the A's coaches room....
in 2016 it was the visitors vs the New York Yankees.

This doesn't actually bother me. Baseball season shouldn't start in early April to begin with.

Opening day is in jeopardy. How did the MLB lockout reach this crucial week of talks?

They play 162 regular season games, then playoffs. How bad could it be to have a 100-game season?
For most of the season, any given individual game is meaningless. And the best team last year lost 67 games.

The Coliseum is of course dated, one of the many concrete monstrosity ball parks built in the 60's.

Here's a quite informative and objective look at the venue. Note that for a while it was described as one of the best ballparks in the nation.

Agreed.

Also, weather really shouldn't be a factor on baseball. The world series should be over by November 1.

Unfortunately, just like the completely unnecessary 17th regular season NFL game, it's all about the Benjamins.

(As an aside, why couldn't the NFL just add another bye week? Most of their revenue is TV dollars, one more gate isn't changing anyone's lifestyle. )

Abandoning the dump is a given. My money is on the A's using the Vegas thing as leverage to get their new stadium in Oakland.

Part of the problem with the Coliseum is that responsibility for its maintenance was left to the city. Oakland experienced some financial straights along the way and the Coliseum maintanance suffered accordingly. And that probably helps explain the plumbing issues. Plus the Coliseum was originally designed for football, and its adaptation to a baseball park was always compromised by the original design. The Howard Terminal ballpark will be designed for baseball, not football, so the huge foul zones should not recur. It's not yet a done deal, but progress seems to be made towards a final resolution.

It was designed as a multi use.

Having the playing surface and facilities 21 feet below sea level may be a contributing factor to drainage issues.

Yeah, that too.

Hopefully the new Howard Terminal site will be well above sea level.
