Too bad we don't have more cops like this Chief in Chattanooga. Saw this story this morning and wanted to pass it along.

I oppose most vandalism and arson, for all of the usual reasons plus because I believe that it's politically counterproductive and self-defeating, because many of the targets are inappropriate and/or hurt oppressed communities if they're destroyed, and because the looting is pure greed.

However, I'm okay with this - relevant targets and actions:
Protesters in some cities target Confederate monuments

... As tense protests swelled across the country Saturday into Sunday morning, monuments in Virginia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Mississippi were defaced....

Thanks to the Rev. Al Sharpton for the reminder, 99 years ago today:
Tulsa race massacre

The Tulsa race massacre (also called the Tulsa race riot, the Greenwood Massacre, or the Black Wall Street Massacre) of 1921 took place on May 31 and June 1, 1921, when mobs of white residents attacked black residents and businesses of the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It has been called "the single worst incident of racial violence in American history." The attack, carried out on the ground and from private aircraft, destroyed more than 35 square blocks of the district – at that time the wealthiest black community in the United States, known as "Black Wall Street".

More than 800 people were admitted to hospitals and as many as 6,000 black residents were interned at large facilities, many for several days. The Oklahoma Bureau of Vital Statistics officially recorded 36 dead, but the American Red Cross declined to provide an estimate. A 2001 state commission examination of events was able to confirm 39 dead, 26 black and 13 white, based on contemporary autopsy reports, death certificates and other records. The commission gave overall estimates from 75–100 to 150–300 dead.

... White rioters rampaged through the black neighborhood that night and morning killing men and burning and looting stores and homes, and only around noon the next day Oklahoma National Guard troops managed to get control of the situation by declaring martial law. About 10,000 black people were left homeless, and property damage amounted to more than $1.5 million in real estate and $750,000 in personal property (equivalent to $32.25 million in 2019).

Many survivors left Tulsa. Black and white residents who stayed in the city were silent for decades about the terror, violence, and losses of this event. The massacre was largely omitted from local, state, and national histories.

In 1996, seventy-five years after the massacre, a bipartisan group in the state legislature authorized formation of the Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. Members were appointed to investigate events, interview survivors, hear testimony from the public, and prepare a report of events. There was an effort toward public education about these events through the process. The Commission's final report, published in 2001, said that the city had conspired with the mob of white citizens against black citizens; it recommended a program of reparations to survivors and their descendants. The state passed legislation to establish some scholarships for descendants of survivors, encourage economic development of Greenwood, and develop a memorial park in Tulsa to the massacre victims. The park was dedicated in 2010. In 2020, the massacre became part of the Oklahoma school curriculum.

Are there protests in Chicago? They seem to be spreading nationwide. If so, rioting?
No too bad. A group of maybe 500 marched down Michigan Avenue but no problems I know of.
Spoke two days to soon on that one. Not pretty tonight.

Mayor of Petal MS stands with MN killer cops. I sent this clown a nice note Saturday; had to send it to the Petal Area Chamber of Commerce since the mayor's own site has no contact provision. It started off "Is Hal Marx as ignorant as he is fat?" and it swiftly segued into words sure to make me forever unwelcome in Petal MS. No great loss. I await his reply.

Owner Whose Store Called 911 On George Floyd: 'I Wish The Police Were Never Called' (article)

Image
Mahmoud Abumayyaleh

Cup Foods would like to extend its deepest condolences to George Floyd’s family, friends and the South Minneapolis community that we know and love. We are deeply saddened and outraged by what happened to George Floyd in front of our store. There is no justification for the use of reckless force displayed by the police that murdered George Floyd. We support this protest and share in their anger.

The incidents that led up to this event teach us all an important lesson about dealing with police. There is a state policy that requires stores to call the police in the case of counterfeit bills. As a check-cashing business, this is a routine practice for us: we report forged money, then the police come and ask patrons about the bill to trace its origin. Upon receiving a counterfeit bill from George Floyd, one of our employees called the police in accordance with this procedure. The owner of Cup Foods, Mahmoud Abumayyaleh, was not present in the store at the time.

Four officers showed up to the scene, and they proceeded to escalate the situation with increased use of violence and force. The nephew of the store owner, who was also present at the time, was yelling for the police officers to stop, and was pushed away by one of the cops. Sadly, we all know the rest of the story. Despite the fact that George never resisted arrest, police proceeded to end George Floyd’s life over a counterfeit bill. It’s likely that George did not even know that he had a fake bill to begin with. We are deeply saddened for our part of this tragedy.

We have been a cornerstone and pillar of this community for three generations of our family and for 31 years have proudly served our neighborhood. Since George’s untimely passing, Cup Foods has been in regular contact with Floyd’s family who flew in from Houston. We are joining each other in prayer and solidarity, standing together to demand accountability from the cops. We will also personally be donating to pay for George Floyd’s memorial service.

Police are supposed to protect and serve their communities; instead, what we’ve seen over and over again is the police abusing their power and violating the people’s trust. We realize now that escalating situations to the police almost always does more harm than good, even for something as harmless as a fake bill. This is not an isolated incident: they have shown time and time again that they do not know how to peacefully handle conflicts in our community. By simply following procedure we are putting our communities in danger. Until the police stop killing innocent people, we will handle incidents like this one using non-violent tactics that do not involve police. We must stand together to fight against institutional racism.

This is our time to demand justice. Please make your voice heard: call and email the Minneapolis District Attorney’s office to reach Mike Freeman. Join us in donating money to funds such as the Minnesota Freedom Fund, Black Visions Collective, and Reclaim the Block. Work within your communities to find alternatives to policing, until the point that local and state officials decide to seriously hold police accountable once and for all. We will continue fighting with our South Minneapolis community until justice is served, not only for George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, but for everybody who is affected by police violence in our country.

There was similar concern not too long ago from the peaceful people of New England concerning the King's tea, ships looted, protests everywhere, homes burned and looted. Even wine cellars were opened for the protesters.
But sadly, the media only focused on the looting, fires and property damages,

And the protests died, as did the leaders and nothing changed

It's always a scream when 1 FAT CAN repeats her/his whiny stupidity. Saves me effort, too!

Here are the "Big words" immediately before and after 1 FAT CAN's quote:
... In Minneapolis, Korey Dean Sr., 46, founder of the Man Up Club, which mentors young black males, said he helped former NBA player Royce White organize a demonstration Friday beginning at U.S. Bank Stadium.

A small group of pro basketball players and their friends, dressed in black, led a parade that quickly swelled in numbers.

Marchers knelt in silence at bridge crossings, prayed and delivered speeches during a 3-mile walk that ended long before curfew. "We started with 300, and we finished with 15,000 people," Dean said. "Not one fight, incident or argument. That is absolutely phenomenal."

Dean said the event was a statement of unity against injustice – a manifesto that "police brutality can no longer be tolerated in our city."

(1 FAT CAN's quote)

"But that's only by a small population in the Twin Cities, and in no way represents the people of goodwill who are out here," Dean said....
I'm impressed that 1 FAT CAN is admitting that s/he's a selective racist that's so gullible that s/he falls for media sensationalism, and that s/he's not smart enough to predict that s/he'd get busted by her/his own choice.

Pretty comprehensive analysis:

Peaceful protesters lament violence at George Floyd demonstrations, but understand the rage behind it

It even discusses the Boston Tea Party. Too many big words for 1 FAT CAN.
Point proved.
