Been said before, but even 44% of those polled "approving" of Trump is beyond all normal reason. That's not far under half - half the people in the US approve of Trump and most of the mess he's making? Lady O had an article about West Virginia and the trumpers there. Their main issue was being forgotten and coal. It's sad that their version of good ol' days weren't really good at all, with miner violence, black lung, abject poverty living through the company store, yada. But with that, you can understand why a person - poorly educated, angry, and resentful - would join the "tear it all down" crowd, even if it meant tearing their own place down. But those people aren't scary - you can understand, and they're not a huge number of people. On the other hand, there's a guy lives beachfront on Carlsbad Boulevard in a multi-million dollar house with a Trump flag in front. What's his excuse? Sure, he's not very dangerous in California, but there are apparently a lot more of him scattered around in less Blue places. WTF can they possibly be thinking?

Reminds me of an adventure I had back in '76, during which the Bicentennial was celebrated all over. So a girlfriend and I thought it would be fun to go to the big bluegrass festival in Galax, VA. We packed up the MG-B, dropped the top and started our road trip from DC area to Galax. For some unknown reason - but probably not the beers or the grass - we got a bit offtrack and found ourselves in Independence, VA, which was also having a festival. The weather was taking a down-turn, we were tired of driving through the darkening woods, so we thought "what the hell - a Bicentennial festival in Independence - very appropriate." Well, Galax had people you'd heard of, Independence had mostly local people whose talent may be a bit less but was made up for with enthusiasm and authenticity. It turned into a mini-Woodstock when the rain started - soggy wet muddy people, lots of weed, singing, dancing, stepping over the fallen. One of the most memorable parts though was a band that had come in from some coal-mining holler in West Virginia. Literally got off their shift in the mine and drove several hours to Independence. Still had on their coal clothing and black smudges on their faces. Couldn't get more authentic mountain music. All of them smoked during their sets, and their music was among the best of the night. Probably all those guys are long dead now - very likely got black lung or lung cancer, but I guess that's what the "beautiful coal" people want back.

In the wide-ranging interview, the president claimed without providing any details that he had locked in “200 deals” as the global economy has been rocked by his widespread tariffs and trade war fears....

However, he refused to share who he has made the deals with, declaring “the deal is a deal that I choose” before rambling about setting tariffs.
