The Food Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I didn't mention the crock-pot, a valuable part of our kitchen. Sometimes on a travel day we'll make a big pot of chili or jambalaya or soup and let it run while we drive. Dinner ready when we arrive.

Got a pressure cooker for Christmas last year. A valuable part of my cooking arsenal. Got rid of the crock pot. Made an awesome chicken soup yesterday. Chili in 90 minutes from start to finish.
Don't know if I'd want to run it while driving though.

Is that the instapot type cooker? We don't have a pressure cooker, at least in part because Lady O has some kind of childhood memory of them blowing up. Yeah, I know - that's like being afraid you'll break your arm on the starter crank on your new Tesla, but still.

The crock pot is quite stable riding in the coach - it would take way more of a turn or bump than we've ever had before to bounce it off the counter. But just in case, we usually set it down in the sink for added precaution.

They don’t blow up anymore. I'm not sure how you do without one. Cuts cooking time to 1/3 on many things.

Also makes making dog food super easy.

Sadly, our dogs have gone over the rainbow, but we also have some space/storage restraints. We've got the crock pot, a coffee maker, and a blender that get used regularly. An instapot would really have to earn its keep to win a space.

Yep, Instapot. Does everything a crockpot does and so much more.

You can even set it to slow cook crockpot style.

I have never had mac and cheese for Thanksgiving and I fervently hope that's a trend I keep up for many years.

The southern style mac n' cheese is good stuff. Never had it on Thanksgiving before I moved down south.

Same theme - Thanksgiving sides - by state rather than regional, and very different results besides the SE mac n' cheese bloc, plus some discussion:
viewtopic.php?p=129632#p129632

I've probably had all with Thanksgiving at one time or another - potluck heavy history - but the 2 sides I associate most specifically with Thanksgiving don't even make your list, stuffing/dressing (yummm) and cranberry sauce (meh).

One caveat to my map is that it's inferred from google searches. It could be that's skewed by complexity of preparation. Who needs to google a salad? If yours is truly a survey, it may be more accurate.

Odd: Not a single state said squash on my map, but it's the entire NE on yours.

There are several very good Thanksgiving squash dishes. There's yellow squash, halved and stuffed with something good, there's squash casserole, there's butternut squash, which can also be stuffed, and there are all of these...

And I like the cranberry sauce, yeah, the jellied kind. And it goes really well on the leftover turkey sandwich.

We all got tested and my son came to visit for 5 days. We had our Thanksgiving yesterday.
Leftovers today. I had my favorite - stuffing with giblet gravy for breakfast today.

Absolutely great in Atlanta and Dekalb, not too sure about most of the rest.

You're concerned about having too much pot?

My 2 cents. We got one a year ago. It does do a lot of things, but it's a bunch of trouble and requires lots of exacting steps. I was not impressed. Now it just sits on the counter taking up space.

Speaking of coffee makers. Has anyone else tries an AeroPress. Makes 1 or 2 cups of the cleanest coffee you will ever try. Small, cheap and easy to clean.
Wow, I just looked - the price has gone up. 6 months ago I paid either 24 or 29 with shipping, today it's closer to 40. Maybe it will go down after Christmas.
