W.....T......F is wrong with those people? Daidalos's comment was regarding how the next pres would have to rebuild up the military from Obama....?!?!?!It has been said many times and I agree with it. "We do not have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem."
I agree with Carson. However, easier said than done. Daidalos makes an excellent point about our military. Also, eliminating the Education Department is an excellent idea, but will our RINO members sign onto this idea. Just saying.

Re: Wingnutties out of control!
There is some "special" stuff going on over there! Apparently, the bubble dwellers believe, unanimously (if you don't believe exactly as asshole Solar you get run off), that Cruz will become the next president and on day one will get rid of the IRS, the Dept.of Ed and the Dept of Energy! I'm pretty sure Solar has seen the "internals" or some such secret that only true Conservative Muricans are allowed to see. He "knows" the Democrat Party is dead for at least a generation!! He also saw the "internals" just before the 2012 election and knew Romney was going to win.

For Republicans Bill Clinton went from a "tax & spend lib'rul who would bankrupt the country" to "tax & spend lib'rul who bankrupted the country" - without the bankrupting the country part. In reality he's the most fiscally conservative President in a couple generations.
Obama went from a President who would "go on a World Apology Tour" to a President who "went on a World Apology Tour", without a single apology. It's been the same with their Obama immigration and guns claims.
Republican claims for just his first budget were summed up best by Jon Stewart: "On what planet is a 4% spending increase a huge cut?" The also screamed about him cancelling the F-22.... ignoring that all the F-22s that were ever going to be built were built. It was the previous administration that decided not to buy another batch after that, and Obama didn't reverse that decision.
So, yes. The Republicans will claim that they have to rebuild when they're eventually back in the White House. They'll grandstand a bit, introduce a spending bill that makes budget-neutral cosmetic change or two, and declare "Mission Accomplished!"

Way too many Nazi references in this Republican race
'Calming' Ben Carson? Listen to his words, he's right up there with Donald Trump
A good review of the Ben Carson story so far.

Granting that it's desperate and self-destructive, is it plausible to give Republicans a little credit for recognizing that their leadership is so dismal that they've resorted to Carson and Trump as a way of saying that anything is better than what they've got?

Nah. I'm still going with what I've been saying since the Repulbicans lost in 2012:Vrede too wrote:So, is it plausible to give Republicans a little credit for recognizing that their leadership is so dismal that they've resorted to Carson and Trump as a way of saying that anything is better than what they've got?
I've expanded on this since then.I'm sure that Limbaugh, Beck and the rest are happy as pigs in.... Fox News. They dodged a bullet.
Their business is based on impotent right-wing rage at the gub'mint, and they have to pipe down when the Republicans ARE the gub'mint. Which is why Fox News came down hard on any candidate in the Republican primaries that sounded reasonable or sane. An Obama win is good for their pocket books.

Re: Wingnutties out of control!
Even if that's what they think, there would be no "credit." If the "leadership" is considered to be people like Boner and McConnell, they're not much different or worse than others have been in those positions. Republicans in particular have had difficulty with the Speaker position, including molester Hastert, "Contract on America" Gingrich, etc. But those guys got stuff done in large part because they didn't have to deal with a group like the "Freedom Cacophony" focused on sabotaging anything that comes up. There could never have been a "Hastert Rule" if he'd had them nipping at his heels like a pack of rabid wiener dogs. Further, it might be possible to make the case that a President doesn't necessarily have to be a career politician if you want to offer examples such as Hoover, or more positively, Eisenhower, but neither of those were nearly as clueless as Trump or Carson. It's OK to assume the role of "reformer" but at a minimum you've got to have a good understanding how what you're reforming really works. Considering anyone a serious candidate who thinks he can get a yuuuge wall built on the border and get the Mexicans to pay for it (even if a yuuuge wall were a good idea) simply through "good management" should be grounds for legal insanity.Vrede too wrote:Granting that it's desperate and self-destructive, is it plausible to give Republicans a little credit for recognizing that their leadership is so dismal that they've resorted to Carson and Trump as a way of saying that anything is better than what they've got?

Okay, "credit" was tongue in cheek, but what is a semi-rational Republican supposed to do given how crappy the POTUS field is? I can see some of them saying, "Screw it, I'll send a message to the GOP by supporting Carson or Trump."
I have donated to and voted for fringe Dems or 3rd parties when dissatisfied with my options.

Vote for HIllary. She and Bill are pretty much what Republicans used to be anyway. Nothing "sends a message" like voting for the other party.Vrede too wrote:Okay, "credit" was tongue in cheek, but what is a semi-rational Republican supposed to do given how crappy the POTUS field is?

Or, they could get behind one of the lesser looney of the bunch. Kashich is almost sanish. Governor of Ohio, not a Brownback. Not beholden to the evangelicals. Problem is, nobody in the Republican party, except somewhat Bush, has shown any willingness whatsoever to stand up against the loonies of loons, no matter what they may have historically have done or been. And Bush was a bat-shit crazy right winger when he was Governor, but now looks the most rational? May be there aren't many if any "semi-rational" Republicans left. I read one article that said this is what they've done to themselves for 30 years or so of constant bashing of all things government and all people political.

Yeah, Kashich is an option, but so irrelevant as to be a far less effective message.
True, but there are the primaries first.O Really wrote:Vote for HIllary. She and Bill are pretty much what Republicans used to be anyway. Nothing "sends a message" like voting for the other party.

As I think about it, seems I toyed with support for Anderson in 1980. Decided it would be a wasted vote, and I think I didn't vote at all.

If one is GOP, s/he will first vote in the GOP primary then maybe vote for Hillary (or Bernie) in the general if they dislike the GOP nominee enough.

Well, I'm a strong proponent of "free range" parenting, and I agree that there's too much helicopter parenting. But I'm pretty sure the vid exaggerated the degree to which all was wonderful and nobody ever got hurt.

Yeah, I guess he was. Of course, the vid he posted "doesn't necessarily reflect the views of the poster..."Vrede too wrote:I thought Seth Milner was the one arguing for putting a bubble around kids because the world is so dangerous now.
Free Range Kids
Actually, I would have enjoyed the vid, and probably have said similar things, except the voice-over guy was so smarmy and full of disdain for any safety precautions now prevalent. But I think it's disingenous to try to portray times 30 or more years ago as being totally safe. Kids did get injured by BB's; they did get head injuries falling off bikes; they did get killed in relatively minor auto accidents from flying around inside the car. So sure, I drove around in a MG-B with the top down and my baby and dog in the same porta-crib in the back. Did they get injured? No, but clearly it was a pretty dumb thing to do and even a fender-bender could have been tragic.
