Re: The Global Warming thread.
We went on a tour of a wind farm today - one of the largest in the US. Totally cool tour. Up close and personal to the towers, along with a bunch of history and information about how they work. Or that "wind turbine technician" is a job in high demand. Among other things, the tech does repair work on the blade from up there on it. The boxes on the top are really about 35 feet long and 13 feet high. Each unit is computer controlled, so it turns itself around to face the wind as well as adjusts the angle of its blades and shuts itself down if the wind gets too high.
The farm has over 2100 units of different sizes, plus a natural gas fired generating plant and two solar farms.

Good god, man! You mean you went to this place knowing those things cause cancer? Did you see any bodies of windmill workers on the ground or do they haul them away every day? Did you have to wear hearing protection against the "rowww rowww rowww" hideous noise they make?O Really wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2019 10:55 pmWe went on a tour of a wind farm today - one of the largest in the US. What about hardhats to protect you from all of those falling murdered birds? Surprisingly, they were able to hide all the atrocities.
But as to the noise - there's basically none. Even standing right under one of the largest units. This farm is close to I-10, and the traffic noise was much louder. They didn't dignify the "cancer" Trump lie with a response, but they did address the bird issue. Bottom line, there isn't a real bird issue. They're required to report all injuries to any wildlife, including birds, but keep in mind it isn't in the interest of the farm- nevermind the birds- to have things banging into the blades. If there was a big problem with birds, they'd be having multi-million dollar units going down all the time. But most of the bird horror stories supposedly started some years ago from a farm with smaller, faster-turning units that were installed on a ridge close to a migration route. The operators noticed feathers and reported them as they were supposed to do. But somewhere in the reporting, each feather got reported as "a bird", which greatly multiplied the apparent carnage. Anyway, all the farms have to track wind and wildlife across the proposed site for over a year before installing units, and nationally there are not many bird incidents.

Yeah, the 35 year old Altamont Pass wind farm.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altamont_ ... al_effects
Bad for raptors and it's a shame that it provided so much legit, but not transferable, fodder for the anti-wind idiots.

Re: The Global Warming thread.
Yeah it is. We also found out about those "lattice" towers, too. Turns out they don't last very long because the vibration of the rotor as well as the tiny bit of movement/sway shakes loose the bolts holding the pieces together. They don't weld them. So they have to re-torque the entire tower from time to time, and if they don't get to it quickly enough, the whole thing just sorta melts over. Interesting, though, one of the reasons for that type of tower was to reduce weight and wind effect. Some of the smaller ones were installed with hinges on the base so they could lower the entire thing to work on the blades or rotor. Good idea on paper - didn't work so well IRL. Also, the other reason there are so many examples of not-so-good technology out there is that originally, the companies got tax benefits and goodies largely for installation, without much if any regard for actual performance. Now they have to produce in order to get paid.

Re: The Global Warming thread.
I don't know if that number of 4700 birds killed per year is still accurate, but to put in perspective...
Depending on the study you read, cats kill from several million to over 2 billion birds a year in the US. And loss of habitat kills off even more each year.
And BTW, 47 million get eaten today.

Re: The Global Warming thread.
Even the worst estimates of windmill kill never compare them to dead birds per KwH for coal, oil and gas. Funny that.O Really wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2019 2:19 pmI don't know if that number of 4700 birds killed per year is still accurate, but to put in perspective...

Mocking 45SHOLE is never inappropriate.
Nice video. Do you think with any of those they're still cleaning up and trying to figure out what to do with the waste 8.5 years later?

Al Gore? Greta Thunberg? 1990s NOAA?“There is evidence that the amount of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere is increasing rapidly as a result of the combustion of fossil fuels,” wrote Garvey. “If the future rate of increase continues as it is at the present, it has been predicted that, because the CO2 envelope reduces radiation, the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere will increase and that vast changes in the climates of the earth will result.
“Such changes in temperature will cause melting of the polar icecaps, which, in turn, would result in the inundation of many coastal cities, including New York and London."

Greta Thunberg named Time magazine's 2019 Person of the Year
Greta Thunberg was named Time magazine's 2019 Person of the Year. She is youngest figure to receive the distinction in its 92-year history....

Irony:
... Thunberg sailed on a solar-powered boat from England to New York this fall for a United Nations climate summit instead of flying, emphasizing it's less harmful to the environment....
Time's first Man of the Year was aviator Charles Lindbergh following his trans-Atlantic flight in 1927.

It would be apt for 45SHOLE but unfair to Barron, who 45SHOLE probably doesn't give a crap about anyhow. Good thing we're not as classless as 45SHOLE.
