President* Trump

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I will never understand how a person could think that "anybody" can do a good job in a political position. One only has to look as far as things like community associations, school boards, club officers to see that there is some talent/experience required. Saying an amateur can do the job of President (or whatever) just shows total disrespect for and ignorance of the job itself. I can understand believing any given politician or collection of politicians is crooked and incompetent. I can see wanting to have a clean sweep. But why not replace them with somebody with a chance of being better?

You have to start by coming to understand just what "better" means to the sort of assholes who espouse such views. And that can be a pretty general and moving target.

Experience and intelligence = elitist.

Not only elitist, but almost always an intellectual, too.

The same goes for putting Dijon mustard on your hamburger.

You know; the horrible terrible scandal that Fox News was criticizing Obama for at this point in his presidency.

Are they using "elitist" as much now that they elected the fat cat son of a fat cat? Not arguing, I don't know.

Aside: I had a Harvard grad girlfriend. She was afraid to tell me for awhile, but I was way proud of it.

How did "elite" get to be a bad thing? Historically, all Presidents have mostly been elite or elitists or they wouldn't have gotten to where they did. They've mostly had good educations from good schools, been successful in something and mostly wealthy or at least wealthyish. Think Eisenhower was a garden variety army grunt? "Republican cloth coat" Nixon? Duke Law grad. Johnson was pretty much a "regular" guy, but he certainly did well in the House and Senate. "Peanut farmer" Carter? Naval Academy/Engineering grad/governor. So sure - "good" can mean different things ideologically, but how can "good" ever be ignorant/inexperience/stupid/incompetent?

Republicans, Fox News and the Tea Party. They chose to champion uneducated whites in rural America. That made the opposite - the educated and city dwellers - the enemy. Especially university professors and anyone from New York or Washington. Educated people kept debunking their claims, so obviously they're all commie lib'rul elites.

Unfortunately there was some truth there. The Wall Street-caused 2008 recession, jobs being off-shored by globalization, far more jobs lost to automation... Corporate and Wall Street elites reaped the benefits and everyone else got the losses. Neither party would punish the crooks or (in non-criminal cases like automation) address the consequences for those on the losing end. The "elites" were obviously in charge and above the law.

While the Fox and the Tea Party convinced their target market of the problem, they failed to appear to be the solution. Allowing Trump to step in. While rich, he was the Washington outsider that Cruz and the Tea Party had convinced everyone was needed. (While failing to convince people that THEY were outsiders.)

Hillary could not have solved the losses to automation, globalization and Wall Street. But she could have come up with a plan to at least lessen the effects. She could have at least addressed the issue. She avoided it, wrote off the rust belt and farming belt, and was correctly hammered as elitist for nevertheless still paying attention to those on Wall Street. Allowing Trump to step in, addressing the problems with false promises of secret solutions.

After all Trump has done and still kept his support, it seems strange that treating Spicey badly by not letting him go to the Pope meeting would be the last straw, but for at least one (among many other unfavorable comments) it appears to be. Remember Spicey is a real Catholic; Trump isn't, and Ivanka and Jared are Jewish.

[quote from comments] This makes me hate Trump. I voted for him, because I hate Hillary. I don't believe he colluded with the Russians. I think we need more discretion when it comes to immigrants, especially Muslims. But this? Icing out a member of his staff who is Catholic? What a wuss. He really is despicable, if he had anything to do with this. What could possibly be the excuse? Sleep deprived? Maybe Spicer didn't want to meet Francis? Well, this is where being Catholic means trusting in God and trying to forgive, and move on. I wish Spicer the best! What an idiot Trump is for doing that!

He has been a super loyal liar for the dunald and this event all by itself goes to prove what a gutless asshole trump is. That said, spicey is also a gutless coward for lying for the dunald day after day.

Trump appears to be the higher authority for Sean.

It could be a rude snub to Spicer, but he's also a very different kind of Catholic from the Pope and there's not as much of a role for a press spokesperson during international travel since the POTUS gets so much direct camera time.

Plus, the way that folks are abandoning Dolt .45, maybe he was worried that Spicer would get swayed and turned away from the dark side. :D

Coming as I do from Lower Alabamistan, it has seemed for a long time as though an "elitist" is anyone who grady-ated 6th grade in one try, and them promptly GTFO of Lower Alabamistan. Spent 7 years in east GA, and down there they like to sneer at folks whom they think are "gettin' above their raisin'." At least I was raised to want it better than the previous generation had it. Well, at least to a point.

President* Trump has retained New York trial attorney Marc Kasowitz to defend him in the federal investigations involving Russia. Kasowitz has represented Trump for over 15 years.

Kasowitz currently also represents Russia's largest bank in a U.S. federal court case of conspiring with others to raid the assets of a competitor.

Russian ties. Who could have predicted it.
Lieberman withdraws from FBI director consideration

Former Sen. Joe Lieberman, once considered a front-runner to succeed James Comey as FBI director, formally withdrew his name from consideration Thursday.

In a letter to President Donald Trump that was obtained by CNN, the 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee cites Trump's hiring of attorney Marc Kasowitz to represent him during investigations into alleged ties between his presidential campaign and Russia.

Lieberman, a senior counsel for the New York-based Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP, said it "would be best to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest." ...
President* Trump has retained a linguist and a Civics teacher to explain that phrase to him. Otoh, it could just be a gift of an excuse for Lieberman to stay off the sinking ship.
