The electoral college is what we must focus on. I still do not understand Ohio.

Re: Romney is opening some big leads
I have a group of about 20 relatives in Ohio and they are stuck literally in the 70's when EVERYONE was a UNION worker and are very hateful towards anyone non union or real work. I don't know maybe there is no career jobs out there.Tertius wrote:The electoral college is what we must focus on. I still do not understand Ohio.
I have one cousin who 30 years later will not stop talking about the BIG MONEY he made in the meat packing plants that he worked at for about 5 years in the 70-80's until he was laid off. I don't think he ever got a real job after that and he's still waiting to be called back.

One thing is that although Michigan gets all the press, Ohio is majorly big in the auto industry and, as the Colonel points out, heavily unionized. One can make the argument that "bankruptcy" is just a technicality and can often be a good thing, words like "let them go bankrupt" aren't forgotten soon by those whose jobs are on the line. That, and there are just a lot of smart people in Ohio.Tertius wrote:The electoral college is what we must focus on. I still do not understand Ohio.

O'Really, you were doing pretty good until you made this statement, "That, and there are just a lot of smart people in Ohio."
Care to explain. Sounds like the Colonel's relatives are a card short of a full deck.
How does it make one smart to wait for the government to come to the rescue?

[sigh] the winking emoticon usually means something like, "this comment should be taken in jest" or "I'm just yanking your chain." Besides, you should know by now that one has to take any of the Colonel's stories with a bit of salt, as it may not necessarily be the relatives who are a card short.Reality wrote:O'Really, you were doing pretty good until you made this statement, "That, and there are just a lot of smart people in Ohio."

I may agree but they are voting just as the polls say.

Yeah, but the lead is narrowing. That's troubling, but I've got confidence in the heartland of America's midwest. Unless Romney can pull off upsets in most of those, he's still toast and the "mid-west farmers' daughters" will have made us "feel alright."Vrede wrote:On what planet is "+1.0" a big lead? No matter, your con RCP now has Obama up by 0.1 nationally, the Intrade Odds at 61.4 to 38.7 for Obama, and the No Toss Up States at 277-261 for Obama.gongoozler wrote:Romney is opening some big leads

Yes, especially when you get those extra 5 votes. But going back from there, Clinton did well, Dukakis didn't deserve to win anyway, and the Reagan wins weren't really close. Nixon was a landslide in '72, but he did somewhat sneak in in '68. Overall, I'll go with Nate Silver until he gets proven wrong.Vrede wrote:

Now that's really dumb. The 47% probably include your parents on Social Security incomes. If you know anyone in the military, they're in there, too. It even includes some millionaires ... who paid no taxes.
If you're worried about the "welfare queens" and all who are on food stamps and TANF, that's only 8% . . . and many of them don't vote.
More Republicon lies busted.

They have all their irrational fear factors boosting their "get out the vote."O Really wrote:Yes, especially when you get those extra 5 votes. Dang, that's harsh!l Did you forget to round up the dead or pay the illegal Mexicans to vote? If not, how can you say you gave it your best? Didn't you read the Alinsky book?Vrede wrote:I wasn't thinking of POTUS elections as much as ones I've been more intimately involved with. That was the moment that I decided I was better suited to issue politics. I left for a peace march through Central America.

True that. There are no ethics in electoral politics. Oh, there are undoubtedly some individual candidates who are honest and ethical. But the people who run their campaign want to win, and will do whatever is necessary to give their guy the chance to do so. Find someone whose campaign didn't lie, cheat, and steal (figuratively if not literally) and I'll show you a former candidate going back to whatever s/he was doing before the race.Vrede wrote:I do regret not being a little smarter or trying a little harder.
It's easier and more personally satisfying to remain ethical with issue politics than it is with electoral politics. Took me a bit to settle on, rather revert to, what I was best at.

Well there was the razor thin margin in the Kennedy Nixon election of 1960. The pre-nutjobs
used to complain that there was something fishy about the vote in Illinois, until it was pointed
out that even if Nixon had won Illinois, he would have lost the election anyway. It took them
a few years to add Texas to the mix. Slow learners.

I used to think Nixon was the Devil. Compared to the current batch of Republicans, he is the epitome of statesmanship.Vrede wrote:It's a real shame that such an honest, warm and ethical man as Nixon got screwed.

Sure, but seriously, many times I've wished for the "good ol' days" when the Republicans were Nixon, Goldwater, Ford, Rockefeller, Dirkson, Bush the Elder and....gulp...choke...gag...even Reagan. None of those could win a seat as a Republican on any city council in 2012.Vrede wrote:On policy, compared to the current batch of many (most?) Dems, too. Yes it was a shame that Dick got screwed (even though he probably didn't). But the best part was this
led, eventually, to the whole Watergate mess where Tricky Dicky was left slowly twisting in his own
blow back, to mix a metaphor or two. I wouldn't have missed that for the world.
