I think he'll surprise us on some issues, though I have no idea which ones. He's even worse than other cons on many things, but it would likely be a mistake to see him as just an extreme lockstep con.

That reminds me: Following previous-administration Republican logic, Iraq is "Trump's war." Afghanistan is "Trump's mistake."

Re: Afghanistan
Just 2 years until we will have soldiers who weren't even alive at the start of this war on the front lines fighting. There are going to be families that have sent two or in some cases three generations to kill and die in the same conflict. Get out!

This is why they hate us.
Impunity for U.S.-Funded Warlords in Afghanistan
On top of our brief foray into direct torture, if that's even really ended, we have always employed murder and torture by proxy.

For my edification: Can anyone explain why we are still there?

Re: Afghanistan
3 reasons, I'm sure there are others:
Perpetual war is profitable.
Perpetual war enhances the domestic power of the military.
As with Vietnam, they know that it can't be won but no leader has the balls to be the one to admit it and withdraw.

It's not nuts to the beneficiaries because they're mostly not paying/suffering the costs. It is nuts for the rest of us.
Next year there will be US kids killing and dying there that weren't yet born when we invaded.

I see almost no similarities between the two, other than the fact that both were profitable.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Mon May 28, 2018 10:21 amAnd that's not nuts because.....??
Vietnam was a real slow entry. Starting with Truman (FDR wouldn't have) supporting the French, but the real hard red line beginning was Ike convincing our puppet in the South to violate the elections required by treaty.
Here's the biggest difference - while continued by JFK, by most accounts he would have ended the war.
LBJ got stuck between a rock and a hard place after Aug 4, 64. His election season response to ramp up that horrible war, or lose the to a racist war monger, destroyed the lives of millions. Too his credit, and to his naivety, he informed all of the 68 candidates that peace was imminent.
It didn't matter that Tonkin didn't happen.
Dick, then, secretly worked with the puppet dictator in the South to refuse the peace treaty and continue the war so Dick's campaign of a secret strategy to win the war wouldn't turn into a losing campaign.
Afghanistan started because lil bush believed the breakfast table stories about being a war president and Cheney and Rumsfeld seeing dollar signs. All involved in the run up lies knew that fox would run cover for their crimes. Unlike the bad information about Tonkin, these shits made up incident after incident to the point that most Americans believed that Saddam was allied with osama, making this forever war easy to sell.
Yeah, Obama the gutless did continue this bs, as would Hillary.
