What are you reading?

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

As TV series have kind of dried up, due to the pandemic, I've switched (somewhat) to reading some books on the shelf I hadn't got round to yet.

Currently reading "Riders of the Purple Sage", by Zane Grey. It's interesting, albeit with some slightly one dimensional characters and very long winded descriptions of the Utah desert and horses. And Mr. Grey really doesn't like Mormons. Still it depicts and time and place in our country that is probably gone forever.
Have you read Lonesome Dove?

Any time I need a laugh or an example of abject ignorance and general dumbfuckery I just click on the cat fan's name and read some of his past comments. Funny as hell and traumatically stupid.

Never saw it.

OTOH, I intended this thread to address readings taking place since the pandemic started.

I didn't intend for it to trigger the OCD contingent. But since just a pin dropping can do that, not sorry.

Never read "Lonesome Dove". I'll look for it.

Finished Riders of the Purple Sage. It had a nice ending. Lots of death along the way, though.

The book I have of it also contains Grey's "The Rainbow Trail". As its preface informs, it contains some resolution of questions left by Riders of the Purple Sage. Not as much death, though (I think). Another good read, with a happy ending. These works make me want to go hiking again in my favorite national park/monument. Perhaps in the fall.
Then maybe some of his other work. Lots have been made into movies, but his books are well researched and the writing moves along.

watching the movie first always spoils the book for me

On that note, let me lament the gradual passing of an American institution. The Used Book Store. One by one they are disappearing. I realize you can get anything you want online these days, but it's no substitute for the hunt, the browse, scanning untold numbers of shelves for THAT book, the smell of old books. They're going the way of 8-track tapes.

I wonder if public libraries as we know them are going to go the way of the dinosaur.

There is a used book store in my town; they also sell used record albums. And I got a copy of Tom Clancy's "The Cardinal of the Kremlin" in a doodad shop down on Main Street here. That same shop had a sign that said "If you were waiting for a sign, this is it" which I almost got. I was holding out for a sign that said "Fuck this shit."

Dude. Go on Craigslist and scan the Free section. Look up "bookshelf" or "bookcase". People moving and giving them away. I've got five good quality shelves in my "man room" for free. I picked them up, threw some Home Depot spray paint on them, good to go. Watch out for the particle board ones though. The shelves may sag when you put some weight on them. I just replaced the cheap shelves with real wood. Worked for me.

What I like about used books is that you can't really know if they've ever been read before. Sure, they may look a little worse for wear but that could be due to some kids throwing it around to each other in some futile effort to alleviate their despicable poverty.....or some guy who can't even read used it to beat his wife. You just never know about shit like this.

My local Costco has had a pretty good book section. Or, at least it used to. Seems to have diminished in size and variety in the last year, but not before I snapped up a number of well bound good works of literature at Costco prices. It's where I got the Zane Grey books and others.

Only problem is I've run out of bookshelf space. Gonna have to build, buy, or borrow more shelving.

I resisted for a long time, but my kindle finally convinced me to get rid of hundreds and hundreds of paperbacks.
