2022 elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Really weird that Republicans now support killing FBI and other federal agents as well as encouraging rape. Freedom!

So I guess Kari is attempting to start a pivot to center as the math most probably shows she can't get elected with just wingnuts.

I predict it's not going to go so well.

Republican Who Praised Hitler Somehow Loses Congressional Primary

Carl Paladino lost his bid for a congressional seat representing New York’s 23rd district Tuesday after being bested by opponent Nick Langworthy — but only by a small margin.

Langworthy narrowly edged out his competitor by roughly three percentage points with 95% of precincts reported as of midnight.

The race drew national attention as Paladino, a businessman and former candidate to become New York’s governor, drew praise from the MAGA wing of the Republican Party, landing endorsements from conspiracy theorists like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), but also Rep. Elise Sefanik (R-N.Y.), the third-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives.

Paladino’s campaign was soaked in controversy. He recently told Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle that “people like [Attorney General Merrick] Garland, who should not only be impeached, he probably should be executed,” before later claiming he was just being “facetious.” In July, it was reported that he hired a man convicted on child pornography-related charges as his new assistant treasurer. Following the shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde in May, Paladino boosted social media posts claiming they were false-flag attacks. In Feb. 2021, Paladino praised Adolf Hitler as “the kind of leader we need today.” ...

It's the complete loss of a moral compass and detachment from reality that baffles me, especially when they accuse anyone who disagrees with them with violations that they themselves are guilty of.

Another bad thing that is at least in part attributable to the media is that these fools get an outsized part of the coverage. There have always been off-track congress critters, but not all that long ago they would have been generally ignored until or unless they were hauled up for ridicule occasionally. Now, I suspect that the group of Greene-Gaetz, et. al. share professional publicity people who make sure their every blatherage is blasted. And re-printed as if it's meaningful. There are 435 members of the House and even in the age of MAGA, most of them aren't total idiots. Why do fewer than 10 of them get all the coverage? (rhetorical question)

Nasty, nasty, nasty. Incumbent Governor (and irl frat boy) Henry McMaster must be scared despite being +8 according to a RepuQ poll. Good, I love it when "safe" RepuQs sweat.

Of course, it's a RepuQ ad so there's more to the story:

Speaking of Sarah Palin -
Peltola beats Palin, wins Alaska House special election

Democrat Mary Peltola won the special election for Alaska’s only U.S. House seat on Wednesday, besting a field that included Republican Sarah Palin, who was seeking a political comeback in the state where she was once governor.

Peltola, who is Yup’ik and turned 49 on Wednesday, will become the first Alaska Native to serve in the House and the first woman to hold the seat. She will serve the remaining months of the late Republican U.S. Rep. Don Young’s term. Young held the seat for 49 years before his death in March.

“I don't think there will be another birthday like today,” Peltola said....

Peltola’s victory, in Alaska’s first statewide ranked choice voting election, is a boon for Democrats, particularly coming off better-than-expected performances in special elections around the country this year following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. She will be the first Democrat to hold the seat since the late U.S. Rep. Nick Begich, who was seeking reelection in 1972 when his plane disappeared. Begich was later declared dead and Young in 1973 was elected to the seat.

Peltola ran as a coalition builder while her two Republican opponents — Palin and Begich’s grandson, also named Nick Begich — at times went after each other. Palin also railed against the ranked voting system, which was instituted by Alaska voters.

All three - Peltola, Palin and Begich - are candidates in the November general election, seeking a two-year term that would start in January....

Peltola has said she was hopeful that the new system would allow more moderate candidates to be elected.

During the campaign, she emphasized her support of abortion rights and said she wanted to elevate issues of ocean productivity and food security....
:happy-cheerleaderkid:

I imagine that the AK GQP is scrambling to get its act together and idk if anyone is betting on lightning striking twice, but it can. Meanwhile, congrats Rep Peltola!

She's got a good platform to send a good message during the campaign. If she has time to at least file a couple of bills. Even if they don't go anywhere, she'll be able to say she filed them.

White House defends attacks on 'MAGA Republicans': 'They're trying to hide'

The White House defended its increasingly combative depictions of the Republican Party as remaining largely in the grip of former President Donald Trump and dangerously comfortable with extremism and violence.

“We understand that we hit a nerve. We get that. We understand they’re trying to hide,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Thursday, just hours before Biden was slated to deliver a speech in Philadelphia on the state of American democracy....

Biden's speech was really good. MAGAs are saying Biden is being divisive and so forth. Do these people not remember the entire Trump presidency? It has to be on purpose. Projection is a large part of their philosophy. Everything they've done, they accuse others of doing.

Trump-Endorsed Blake Masters Slyly Scrubs Election Fraud Lies From Website
After winning his primary with Trump's support, the Arizona Senate candidate removed language saying the 2020 election was stolen.

... According to CNN’s KFile, Masters has modified wording on his site that supported Trump’s election claims, argued the country would be better off if Trump was still president, and claimed Democrats are trying to “import” a new electorate ― rhetoric that matches a white supremacist conspiracy theory.

Those views were on Masters’ website on Aug. 1, the day before he clinched the GOP primary. They’ve since disappeared.

One section that was edited initially read: “We need to get serious about election integrity. The 2020 election was a rotten mess ― if we had had a free and fair election, President Trump would be sitting in the Oval Office today and America would be so much better off.”

Now, it says: “We need to get serious about election integrity.”

... Masters’ campaign has similarly moderated his stances on abortion since the primary, NBC News first reported last week. Masters quietly deleted a section of his website Thursday that said he was “100% pro-life,” shortly after releasing a new ad claiming he supported “commonsense regulation around abortion.” After softening his position in the ad, he attacked his opponent, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly, for “lying about my views on abortion.”
 :obscene-birdiered:
The revised posture comes as many GOP candidates attempt to distance themselves from controversial opinions on abortion and the 2020 election that have proved unpopular with voters ahead of the November midterm elections.

Masters, who made headlines in June for blaming gun violence on Black people, is currently trailing about 8 percentage points behind Kelly in FiveThirtyEight’s polling average for the Senate race.

Arizona Senate Nominee Blake Masters Posts Racist, Sexist Tweet
Diversity at the Federal Reserve is a “compelling explanation” for a bad economy, Masters implied.
