I'm going to Sedona/Flagstaff Arizona in May. Got any suggestions on what I should check out while there (aside from the Grand Canyon)?
How is the weather in Flagstaff that time of the year?

Take along a warm jacket for evenings - days probably fairly warm. If you go into the Canyon, expect temps to rise as you go in - follow all the precautions they tell you about.JTA wrote:I'm going to Sedona/Flagstaff Arizona in May. Sedona has some good tours out to the Indian ruins, but just looking around there is worth the trip. If you're buying Indian goods, go to the road stands outside of town - not the shops. Same stuff, half the price.
Take the half-day Colorado river float from Page, AZ. http://www.raftthecanyon.com/ Do it. Don't miss it. Book now. The whitewater through the canyon isn't so great. Three days, plus you have to climb out of the canyon at the end of the trip. Also, you'd have to have already booked it by now.
Don't bother with the Canyon helicopter ride. Too expensive for too little time. Too many trees, not enough canyon.
Try to get up to Zion if you have time. Actually way better than Grand Canyon. Have fun!

Where can I find the spiritual vortexes? Any chance they are nearby a McDonalds or BK in case I want to exit for a quick snack?Vrede wrote:

Dunno, when I was in Sedona, we only went down to the creek and there wasn't a BK or McDs to be found ...JTA wrote:Where can I find the spiritual vortexes? Any chance they are nearby a McDonalds or BK in case I want to exit for a quick snack?Vrede wrote:

the road along the creek through the canyon from flagstaff to sedona (ya gotta start in flagstaff and go south - it's a series of surprises and wonders filled with a bunch of - I wish I lived here) may be the prettiest drive anywhere in the countrymike wrote:Dunno, when I was in Sedona, we only went down to the creek and there wasn't a BK or McDs to be found ...JTA wrote:Where can I find the spiritual vortexes? Would it be worth the extra money to stay in Sedona? Would you suggest staying in Flagstaff or closer to Sedona?

If you think "Best Western" is a bit shaky, try this one... http://bestwesternsedona.com/JTA wrote:Would it be worth the extra money to stay in Sedona? Would you suggest staying in Flagstaff or closer to Sedona?
Spectacular views, great place to stay. Reasonable.

I'll stop my complaining about having to close the family room windows last night - it was either that or long pants and a shirt.

Nice. A little over my budget though. I found one for about 80 bucks a night with a fridge and microwave that has reasonable reviews.O Really wrote:If you think "Best Western" is a bit shaky, try this one... http://bestwesternsedona.com/JTA wrote:Would it be worth the extra money to stay in Sedona? Re: Arizona
Arizona was great! I checked out almost every corner of the AZ and a good chunk of Southern NM and put >2k miles on rental car. I'd say I was least impressed with the Grand Canyon. There were too many people, which was expected I guess. I didn't have time to hike any of the trails either. I took the scenic route from Flagstaff down to Sedona. Aside from my fiancee freaking out thinking we were going to drive off the cliff, it was a nice drive.
After the great state of NJ, Arizona is definitely my new favorite.

Re: Arizona
I wonder how I missed this thread!?! I love AZ; from the deserts to the mountains! There are some mountain areas that remind me a lot of NC.
We drove up to Mt. Graham (10,700+ ft.) from Safford into the Coronado NF once in August. As the road ascended from the desert, we began to enter into green forest
with huge poplar, oak, maple and pines. The higher in elevation we got, the cooler the temperature got. (we left Safford @ 99 degrees)
When we got to the summit just as the sun went down, we found folks sitting around campfires with jackets on! When it got completely dark, you could see
the lights of Wilcox, AZ off in the distance. Beautiful place!
New Jersey?? No thanks.

Yo, JTA - sounds like you hit all the right places.
Yeah, AZ is great if you don't live there and have to be "represented" by the craziest people west of the NC and FL legislature.

Sounds like a comment from somebody who has never been to the northwest part of the state, or probably Cape May, either.Leo Lyons wrote:

Re: Arizona
I grew up close to Cape May and still go there every year. Most people probably only drive through NJ via the interstate. If that's the case then yeah those parts are pretty damn ugly. So is the northeastern part of the state outside of NY for the most part. One thing I miss most about NJ was the amount of locally owned shops and restaurants and the lack of subdivisions where I lived anyway. We had a bunch of real old houses built in the 1700's everywhere that gave it a sort of colonial feel that I always thought was cool.O Really wrote:Sounds like a comment from somebody who has never been to the northwest part of the state, or probably Cape May, either.Leo Lyons wrote:

If you're ever up there, be sure to visit Camden. It's a beautiful city with a vibrant night life sure to charm anyone. Definitely a must see.
