2020 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

What - this sentence isn't perfectly clear?
"...contacted before the vote by the whips and told we’d have the whip removed if we voted against the motion..."
That amongst others, and how do they call for elections?? :?: :?: :x

Other than the fixed 5-year intervals...
A motion of no confidence is passed in Her Majesty's Government by a simple majority and 14 days elapses without the House passing a confidence motion in any new Government formed
A motion for a general election is agreed by two thirds of the total number of seats in the Commons including vacant seats (currently 434 out of 650)

Flores becomes 5th Texas GOP congressman retiring in 2020

... Five-term Rep. Bill Flores is the 14th House Republican so far to announce plans to depart this year, compared with three House Democrats who have said they are leaving....

More than one-third of the House GOP retirements are now from Texas, where a generation of Republican dominance is weakening amid demographic changes and booming suburbs that are trending to Democrats

Democrats control the House 235-197, with one independent and two vacancies in North Carolina that are scheduled to be filled in special elections next week.

Flores' announcement also kept House Republicans ahead of their pace during the 2018 election cycle, when 34 of them did not run for re-election. That was the party's highest number of retirements since at least 1930.

Among the other Texans leaving are Will Hurd, the House's only black Republican, and Rep. Michael Conaway, a former House Agriculture Committee chairman.

My ignorance on British election terminology and procedures is embarrassing.
You understand more than you think.

Rightwingers with a large contingent of racists, religious bigots and xenophobes in their ranks barely won an election, placing a lunatic asshole in charge.
The remaining semi-sane rightwingers were driven out or cowed into silence.
Leftwingers predicted incompetence and chaos.
The leftwingers were absolutely correct, even leaving the politics out of it, but a lot of rightwingers refused to accept the obvious.
The dire consequences of the election are being felt by the economy and the rightwingers, too.
Responsible people are holding their breath and hanging on until the next election when sanity can be restored.

Sound familiar now?

20 or so Members of Parliament who were loyal Tories (Conservatives) chose to vote against the will of their off-rails leader, knowing they'd get booted from the party. "Remove their whip" is basically taking away their ability to act as or be part of the party, including being able to run in that party in the next election. Turning them into independents without a party unless they join one of the others. They knew the price they'd pay, and they voted against Boris anyway because they thought the issue was more important than the politics. And in America, on the other hand...

"No-deal" Brexit is dead again, at least for now.

Government chief whip (in House of Lords) announces government cave-in at 1.20 am - they are lifting the filibuster after 10 hours, with a commitment that the EU Bill will pass by 5pm Friday

GOP Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner won't run for re-election in 2020

... It also makes him the latest of several big-name Republicans to leave the Wisconsin stage: former House Speaker Paul Ryan (who retired after 2018), former Gov. Scott Walker (who was defeated in 2018) and current Rep. Sean Duffy, who announced he would step down this month to focus on the health problems of the baby he and his wife are expecting. (yeah, right  )
Wisconsin is coming home.
Sensenbrenner said he is not retiring for health reasons or because he is worried about a re-election challenge. He is at least the 15th GOP member of the House to announce retirement this year, a group that includes Duffy.

Sensenbrenner said his decision was also unrelated to serving in the minority, where he has spent virtually half his congressional career, and unrelated to the turbulence of Donald Trump’s presidency....
Yeah, right. Now 15 Repugs retiring from the House vs just 3 Dems.

The House is lost, the WH is lost, and the Senate is probably lost. It won't be fun to be a DC Repug for several years.

OK, so I know publications select images of politicians, entertainers, and sports people with some possible degree of bias. But when lots of photographers, publications, editors, yada keep coming up with similar-looking shots (like Trump's asshole-shaped lips), you start to think maybe that's what the person looks like a lot of the time. And, again like the perpetually angry look of Trump, you start to think maybe that's what the person is like. So with that context, is this the real Bernie! ? Looks like it to me.

How bad is it?

Boris Johnson just sacked Winston Churchill's grandson from the Conservative Party

Sacrilege.

Boris Johnson’s Brother Quits Parliament And Everyone Cracks The Same Gag
Twitter users are flipping an age-old excuse on its head to troll Britain’s prime minister.

Guess (I had to look, but didn't have the sub-headline where I first saw this).
Spoiler:
"resigned from his roles as a minister and member of Parliament for Orpington in order to spend less time with his family."
 Ouch.

Comments:
I seriously thought that Trump was his brother.
You cannot make this stuff up when it comes to Trump and now Johnson.
Loyalty to country should trump family loyalty, especially in politics.
If Republicans had any values, they would put country first and party second.
British Trump is a laughingstock just like American Boris is.
Trump and Boris..... 'special' twins, separated at birth. *GAG*
I think this all may trace back to the 2004 "Vote for the Worst" campaign on American Idol. It's not funny anymore.

Some of the bias may not even be negative. Photographers and editors like drama. Could be that the most dramatic shots are angry asshole POSPOTUS, dopey Biden, patronizing Hillary and curmudgeon Bernie. Not much drama in scholarly Elizabeth Warren, so they just take what they get.
