I've been in restaurants, or the cafeteria area at work where a waitress would ask me "would you like some more coffee, honey? (or dear, or sweetie, etc.)"; but if I should say "thank you, dear (or sweetheart, honey, etc.) to a female co-worker at work, I can be slapped with a sexual harassment suit.

If I tell a female co-worker that her clothes are ugly and she has an ugly hair style; she'll get all puffed up and pissed off
and probably never speak to me again. But if I tell her how nice she looks that day and she has pretty hair, she'll get all
huffed up and complains to management or files charges against me for improper advances or sexual harassment.

There's a saying about calling a spade a spade; but we're living in such a sterile world now, you best not call it a fucking shovel.

When I was growing up, queer meant anything that was different or odd; because it was so widely expressed, gays adopted the phrase to apply to themselves. No biggie.
